Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Quick filter for

I know I can do a find by form to find the first record that matches my entry. I now would like to find ALL records that match my entry. (to create a found set of records)In the A5 help it seems that quick filter for... should work, but when I right click on a field, I only get the copy and paste utilities. Also, no "quick filter for..." is available in the menu. Has this changed in V6? I'm not familiar with other versions.

    ref; Alpha 5 help:

    Quick Filter For...

You can quickly create a filter to search for records in a form or browse that have a specified value:

Right-click on any field and select Quick Filter For... from the right-click menu.

Enter the value to find in the Filter Field dialog box.

    Click OK.

Only records which contain the specified value are displayed, while the others are filtered out.

The V6 menu sure looks different than v5 to me too. I quess I haven't used that right click menu too much. In v6 I do get the same as the v5 menu if I'm in record entry in a browse. But that's not where it's needed.

In v6, you can use the quickfilter icon in the standard icons. Not quite the same, but it's what I've normally been using.

Al, the quick filter will find all the records that have the same value as the control. I want to enter a new value and search on that. I'm coming from Filemaker and we want to find a "set" of records from a value we enter and I'm having a tough time finding the right way to do that. It's probably a query of some type but it seems the help file is not updated to show V6 stuff.

It's probably a mistake in the code. Email a picture of v5 and a picture of v6 showing the differences to [email protected]

            RE: Quick filter for

the "Find" functions search for a matching record and move the record pointer.

the "Query" functions filter the table thereby returning a group / set of records that match the filter criteria.

"Quick filter" is a special (convenient) form of query.

Once a query is run it remains in effect until you detach it, show all, or change to a new primary index sequence. If you want to run repeated queries, I think you need to restore an unfiltered view of the table between each iteration, unless you are trying to subselect records.

Thank you Tom. An explanation from a pro. I appreciate it. Alpha is very powerful and I think those of us that come from weaker designs get a little overwhelmed with the options. It's nice for you to take time to help us.

                RE: Quick filter for

I called up an adhoc browse and was able to right click and obtain the quick filter menu ....BUT....
once I hilited the field that I wanted to use as the search criteria, I had to right click on some other part of the browse to bring up the quick filter menu.. then it worked OK

however, when I changed to the adhoc form, the right click menu would not bring up the quick filter menu... It only gave the usual Windows right click menu.... cut,paste,etc..

As far as entering the 'value' that you want to search for, (like in FileMaker), I was able to do that by using 'quick filter for'..

                Hope this helps some

You're right Richard. If you select the field first, then right click, you get copy and paste. If you simply right click, you get the filter menu. Live and learn.

                  Thanks

Now I've learned that it only works in a browse and not a form.
