Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tab Order

I'm nearly done with my application so setting the tab order is next. Is there a limitation to this utility? I have about 425 fields on a 7 tab form and I can't seem to get the tab order right. I've tried about ten times but each time I successfully (I thought) set the order, it doesn't tab between tabbed pages correctly. If I then go back into design mode and check the tab order, it's a mess again, nothing like what I set up. It's like it has a mind of it's own. Is the 425 field number a problem with tabbed forms?

    Thanks

    RE: Tab Order

    Hello Bill,

I don't have time to create a 425 field form to see if I have the same issue. But if I were having this issue, I'd try to do the first 20 or so tab orders. Then save the form and pack the table. Then go back in and do the next 20 or so, save and pack. Etc, etc. You can start in the middle of the Tab order by holding down the shift key while clicking on the desired Tab order number.

    Good luck,
    Jim

      RE: Tab Order

Thanks Jim, I've tried doing 1 tabbed page, saving, even quitting and restarting the computer with no luck. I haven't packed the tables, but there is no data. Would packing still help? I just thought maybe this was a known issue.

        RE: Tab Order

Packing doesn't seem to help anything. I can do 1 tabbed page, save, quit, restart and that 1st page now has a completely nwe set of numbers, no necessarily in order. I do have a tabbed object on one of the tab pages. Does having a tabbed object within a tabbed object create a problem?

          RE: Tab Order

The set tab order by table is terrible. The fields are not in creation order nor alphabetical order. With 425 fields to find, I'd be days trying to do that. I hope someone has a suggestion. I've attached a copy of the files in case anyone has time to take a look. The form I'm having a problem with is "Application"

          Thanks

            Bill,

Let me offer my $.02 on your problem.

I would select the tab order by table and move the list out of the way so that I can see the form. Notice that on the list, the fields that are above the tabbed form (if there are any) just show the field names, the fields on all the tabs are followed by the name of the first tab and tghen a numbezr representing first tab, second tab, etc. You can move the fields up or down fairly easily (and quickly).

I really don't think the task is as daunting as you might initially think it is.

              RE: Tab Order

              Bill,

I have a multi-tabbed form that has 95 objects on 3 pages. I don't have a need to tab to any object on the first two pages so I set the property for each object, unselecting "set as tab stop". As I would have the mouse in hand to change the TABBED pages, selecting exactly what I wanted to is a matter of a click. It is on the 3rd page that I have set the tab order but I also unselected the tab stop on those fields that just show data. In other words, if I'm not typing data in, there is no reason to have the tab stop set. I've gone from 95 tabs down to 8 tabs.

                RE: Tab Order

Thanks Dave, but half of my fields display as "field 32" and "field 223" rather than by their names. Any idea why the tab by example doesn't work? This is a big problem fter 60 hours of work.

                Thanks

                  RE: Tab Order

Thanks Al, of the 426 fields, only 375 need to be in the tab order. Maybe removing the tab stop from the other fields might help. I'll let you know...

                    RE: Tab Order

Removed all the unnecessary tab stops and redid the entire tab sequence. Saved the form. Went back into design mode, chose set tabs by example and voila, there are the tab settings all different than what I just set. Pretty discouraging.

                        RE: Tab Order

Thanks Scott, I did that. In the meantime I went into the form, deleted the tabbed object from the tab pane and all tabs appear in the correct order. I didn't even have to set them! So it appears, at least for now, that you cannot place a tabbed object on another tab pane and have the tabstops work correctly. I'll post an answer from Alpha if I get one.

                        Thanks everyone for their input.

                          Bill,

I may be mistaken but it sounds to me like you're using a multi-tabbed form and want to start the object tabbing on a page that is not page 1. You can alter the tab sequence slightly but changing the order of the tabbed pages so that what was pages 1,2,3 are now in the order that you wish: 2,1,3, etc. Just go to form properties where you'll find the names that you assigned to the page tabs and use the arrows to the right to move the pages. I even have 1 page with the name ".", a period, so that I could have a blank page or it could be used as a window or entrance to the app.

Al, I want them is the correct order, tab 1, tab 2 etc. It seems where I run into the problem is that on the tab pane 4, I have another tabbed object with 4 tabs of it's own. Kind of a sub-tabbed object. A5 doesn't seem to like that, for the tab order at least. Other than the tab order, it works fine. Sort of a drill down with tabs.

                              Bill,

I would imagine that, if I had what you're describing, the tabbed object on pane 4 would not be in the tab order. You say that it has only 4 tabs. Take them out and see what happens. It wouldn't take long to restore either if it's not working the way you want.
