Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Still no security on one WS

    Hi All,

    I am refering back to a previous post and dare to pick it up once more since I am really stumped.

    To reiterate:

    I have set up an app with security by defining 5 users in two groups, login dialog et al. It used to work - now it doesn't any more and for the life of me I can not see a reason for this ...

    Here are the facts:

    - The user login prompt does no longer appear, but the db is opened immediately.

    - The autoexec script does not run despite having set the option in prefences.

    - When going to menu Tools\Security and upon hovering the mouse over the entry for 'Security...', it takes about 20 seconds, until all the available menu choices are displayed. Other main entries (e.g. Backup/Restore) appear almost immediately.

    - After seeing the security choices, only the first entry (Set database password...) is active with all others greyed out, despite the fact that I have entered 5 users and 2 groups before.

    - Upon selecting this entry, it takes a while until a script error ist trapped. It reads:
    "Script:assign_db_password_2 line:62 Error 1"
    In the script window itself, the following single line is peceded by a blue triangle: a5_security_option("SetDatabasePassword")
    And thats all she wrote...

    - This same app is working OK on my home computer. Same machine (DELL Precision 340), same OS (W2K SP4)

    - A comparison of file -names, -dates, -times, -sizes between the two machines did not reveal anything special.

    - A5 is patched up to the same and latest build on both machines.

    - It's NOT database specific! It's doing the same with AlphaSports where there is NO security set up!

    - One other thing which does seem out of whack is, that upon launching A5v6, the most recently used db is not listed. I went to the registry and verifyed, that the list there is OK. It only shows entries for the samples coming with the install...

    Yes, I have completely reinstalled A5v6 into a fresh diectory, removed all files left behind after the deinstall, etc as suggested by Aaron. Still no luck!

    I would be very glad if somebody could point me in the right direction. It must be machine specific, but what?

    Thanks for each and every input :)

    Did you ever delete all the Alpha Five Version 6 registry entries like I suggested before?

    Try going to the interactive window and running these commands. Let me know the results.

    ? user_groups()

    ? a5_securityenabled()

    ? A5_UserBelongsTo("Administrators")

    ? a5.Get_Master_Name()

    ? a5_sec_external_uaf()

      RE: Still no security on one WS

      Aaron,

      Many thanks for your effort - most appreciated!

      Here are the results from the interactive session:

      ? user_groups()
      = ""
      ? a5_securityenabled()
      = .F.
      ? A5_UserBelongsTo("Administrators")
      = .F.
      ? a5.Get_Master_Name()
      = "" "This is just a local app, non-shadowed
      ? a5_sec_external_uaf()
      Error 1

      You didn't mention registry hacks in your earlier posts - must have been to somebody else. I am probably not the only guy benefitting from your help :-) Could you steer me to the relevant registry keys to look for pertinent entries?

      Again, many thanks for your help!

        RE: Still no security on one WS

        Well, clearly the problem has something to do with a5_sec_External_uaf()....What do the following commands return?

        ? api_getmachinename()
        ? api_getdomainname()

          Hi Aaron,

          Here goes:

          ? api_getmachinename()
          = "ZCWS18"
          That's my machine OK...
          ? api_getdomainname()
          Error 1
          ....I do see all network resources from my machine...

          Thanks for nursing me through all this!

          Regards

            Sounds like you're having an issue with the wscript.network OLE object.

            I'll do some research and see what I can come up with.

            Try this

            DIM wsn AS OLE::wscript.network

              RE: Still no security on one WS

              Aaron,

              I have entered this via the interactive window.
              Here goes:

              DIM wsn AS OLE::wscript.network
              Error 1

              In the meantime, I had a quick glance into the registry. Despite having completely de-installed A5v_5_ it's key structure is still present in the registry!
              Just for your info...

              Thanks for helping me!!

                    Aaron,

                    I could kiss you :-))

                    Everything working like a charm now!
                    (I am still wondering on what might have removed WScripting on this machine, though)

                    You guys are truly outstanding.
                    Try confronting M$ with such a problem (one which is, as we can now see, in no way connected with the product). One would most probably have to wait till 'hell freezes over' and still get no answer...

                    Again, many thanks for all your efforts! Great People, Great Product.

                    Regards from the Alps
