Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import text file

was wondering if someone could help me with this

I need to import a tab delimited text file into a table I have in my database...

I would first need to unzip the file because it comes as a zip file and then import the text file in the zip inot my database...

The person using this database would receive many of these files who then would be imported in the system

The files would have names like 04110900.zip witch would have in it 04110900.txt... and then the next file would be 04110901.zip etc...

How can i do this with alpha five

    RE: Import text file

    Judith:

1 - extract the file from the zip file.
2 - use the import geinie to import the file into a new dbf.
choose the selections to offered by the geinie to define the tabbed file.
    create field names as needed.

3 - once the data has been imported verify accuracy.

4 - append the new dbf to the existing dbf.

Note: the file name you want to import appears tobe all numeric. You will have to create a new dbf that begins with an alpha character.

    i hope this helps

      RE: Import text file

Not really, I was loking to automate this part...

I have done it with access, where the user selects from a menu Import files

and the access prog does the rest for the user...

I was wondering if there was a way to do this with alpha, with access I used an add in to unzip the files from access, and then code to import the files..

      Thanks

        RE: Import text file

Yes, this can be fully automated IF everything is basically the same except for the file name.

The File.Unzip() command can be used to unzip the file. If necessary, the File.Ziplist() command can be used to determine which files are available inside the zip file.

If the file being unzipped always has the same format, a standard routine can be built to import it.

You would probably have to start with a routine to allow the user to select the file to be imported, then run the routine to unzip it, then the import routine. (Just to clarify, these "routines" could all be contained in one script.)

Then I would suggest a routine to either delete or rename the original zip file and the file that was unzipped so they don't get imported again by mistake. Of course, this depends on where the original zip file is - if it's on an external drive of some sort (floppy, CD, memory stick, zip drive, etc.), you might leave that alone but you may want to copy it first to your hard drive before unzipping then delete the files from the hard drive when done. Decisions, decisions!

            RE: Import text file

Note that you can automate the "copy file to backup folder and delete from current folder" with the following commands:

            file.copy()
            file.remove()

(There is probably an action scripting equivalent but I don't use action scripting much any more.)
