Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Anyone using Alpha Five v6/QODBC/Quickbooks SDK?

    I - like many others with no prior QB SDK experience - am trying to select a good set of software tools for my first QB SDK project. Alpha Five v6 gets some excellent reviews as a general database development tool but...

    Is anyone actually using the Alpha Five v6 / QODBC / Quickbooks SDK development tool combination? If so, please post your comments. Many praise the power and relative ease of development for Alpha Five but how does it work with the Quickbooks SDK (with or without QODBC)? Any limitations I should know about? How does a finished solution perform? Pros & cons vs. MS Access or other solutions?

    IMPORTANT!
    Alpha Five had its own dedicated add-on (QLinker) for interface with the Quickbooks' SDK but it seems to have been abandoned with the latest Alpha Five v6 release. Apparently, QODBC will take its place.

    The QODBC FLEXquarters site declares: "Alpha 5 is a preferred partner of FLEXquarters.com LLC, and the Alpha 5 software is an excellent choice for end users to develop applications based on the QODBC Driver for QuickBooks. We believe you will be impressed by it's ease of use and flexibility in creating applications without complicated coding."

    Other than this statement, I can find HARDLY ANY information on the web from actual users of this tool combo (with or without QODBC). This may be a bad sign. No user base to turn to for tips and tricks is a concern.

    I have limited experience and money invested with MS Access but I'll happily abandoned it if Alpha Five v6 / QODBC will help make my development life easier without necessarily degrading the performance of the finished product.

    Anyone with first-hand experience? Anyone at all?

      a5 v6 has extensive support for ADO. (ActiveX for Data Objects).

      There is a huge body of information on using ADO that is available on the Internet.

      The QODBC driver can be used with ADO to read and write data directly from Quickbooks tables.

      The OODBC drivers allows you to use SQL commands to manipulate data in Quickbooks.

      Here is an example of how xbasic can use ADO to work with data in Access. The only difference if you want to use QODBC and not Access is the connection string.

      DIM cn as P
      dim rs as P
      cn = ole.create("adodb.connection")
      rs = ole.create("adodb.recordset")
      rs.locktype = 3
      rs.cursortype = 1
      rs.cursorlocation = 1
      'Open the connection
      cn.open("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c:\northwind\northwind.mdb;Persist Security Info=False")
      'Open the Record Set
      rs.open("select * from customers",cn)
      'Get a pointer to the Fields collection
      DIM flds as P
      flds = rs.Fields

      DIM fldscount as n
      'Get the number of fields in the Record Set
      fldscount = flds.Count

      'Close the Record Set
      rs.close()
      'Close the Connection
      cn.close()

        RE: Anyone using Alpha Five v6/QODBC/Quickbooks SD

        Can some one help me. I am using the 30 day trial of the Qodbc with alpha 5 v 6 with the enterprise 2004 and am attempting to import various tables into a database in alpha but get the following message. Invalid procedure call or argument. Error occurred at line 700. This was from the alpha import geni. I have tested the Qodbc with their vB script and I could see all of my tables in their vb script. I am wondering if I have something wrong in the odbc file data source. I am using the file data source and looking at my g: directory on the network server and pointing to that quickbooks data file.

          Larry,

          I haven't made enough progress to be much help to you. Neither have I received much input from my original post that started this thread. However, I am still hoping that Alpha Five becomes a leading developmental tool for anyone starting out on a Quickbooks SDK project. For newbies, the QBSDK learning curve is overwhelming.

          Perhaps, more related activity on this forum will encourage the Alpha Five people to put more resources in our direction.

          For the time being, you may have better luck asking your question on the QODBC forum here:

          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qodbc/messages

          Matt Froncek, one of the QODBC developers, is supposed to be working on some more Alpha Five/QODBC examples to compliment the one found here:

          http://www.qodbc.com/qodbcalpha.htm

          For anyone with interest, let's make some noise!

            Interest, yes. Time, no.

            I've done some work in the past with QLinker and it's working. I'd like to see if it could be done more easily with QODBC but don't have the time right now.

              RE: Anyone using Alpha Five v6/QODBC/Quickbooks SD

              Just to add to this discussion...

              I just upgraded to QB 2005 Premier and used the free version of QODBC to import the customer list. I am considering various options on how to integrate my data with QB.

              For the record I started trying with QB 2001 and QODBC is not compatible. There was a FAQ in the QODBC documents (or was it on their site?) that pointed out ways in which QODBC would not work.

              I created my own driver (?)(I have very little experience with ODBC, and by the way am using A5 V5) to work on the one machine, with one file. I think you need to use a different set up if you are working on a networked environment. See those FAQ's.

              Having done a successful import I then set up a link to the live data. All I need is to look in QB and see that customer data exists. However, this link did not work real well, though I was able to see the data.

              Now I am exploring simply using IIF files. My goal is simply to use my database to do some data entry, as I have a slick integrated data entry set up. Then I want to import those transactions into QB. Seems an IIF file is as easy as QODBC, and these are simple and rock solid. And free.
