Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Attempts to get updates causes hang

I'm having problems with the update feature.

I can start A5V6 and open and use a database successfully. But when I close that database and then reopen the 'Recent Database" dialog box, A5 hangs.

Also, if I start A5 and click on the 'News' tab on the startup dialog box it just hangs A5.

Finally, if I select 'Check for Updates' from the Help menu it hangs A5.

    Here is what I'm running:

    A5V6 Full Version, Build 1542, Addins 2024.

This might be fixed in a newer rev, but I can't get to them.

    Any ideas?

it is possible that you have a virus checker of popup blocker that is preventing a5 from accessing the internet.

you can download the latest patch by pointing your browser at

RE: Attempts to get updates causes hang

I have both pop-up blockers (Google Tool Bar in IE but default browser is Mozilla with built-in blocker) and a firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro). But both of these have been on and have not changed since installing A5V6 and I've successfully retrieved updates several times. It only after installing the 1542 patch that I'm having problems, although I did not notice it right after installing 1542 patch. I really noticed it when I logged out of one local user on my home (not on a domain) computer and logged in as another user. A5V6 had been working fine for both users, but this time it wanted the S/N again. I put in the information and then it hung trying to get the News.

      Any other ideas?

RE: Attempts to get updates causes hang

I have a similar issue, that is I get very slow download rates 12.5 KB/sec or less. It starts out at over 200 then slows down and hangs every 1.5 to 2 mb worth of download. I have never had a problem with any other service. I am using a cable modem and get speeds in excess of 300 KB/sec with updates from symantec and the like. It takes me 2 hours to download the updates. I have to stop and restart it 20+ times. I have tried turning off all blockers, firewalls, and virus scanners but to no avail. It is very frustrating. Has anyone else had this problem. It is 2:55 am in Los Angeles right now and I got up to try it now, but it is doing the same thing.
