Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Converting a Countdown Timer to Time

    All:

    I've been all over the board tonight but can't seem to find how to do this.

    I have created a countdown variable which I set on the form as an OnTimer event. Code I used I got from the board (can't remember who from - Sorry but thanks) which is:

    var-"countdown=var-"countdown-1
    countdown.refresh()

    This works like a champ so that when the form opens the counter starts down.

    I've created a calculated field to convert the counter to time:

    tm = totime(Var-"Countdown,2,0)

    However tm only changes when I go to the next record and I can't seem to find a way to refresh tm will I'm still on the same record.

    I'm trying to show the time remaining to complete a test that the app is providing.

    Any ideas

    Bob

    RE: Converting a Countdown Timer to Time

    Hello Bob,

    Not sure what you are wanting to accomplish, but I assume you want to format the 'countdown' timer. I'd just use another variable such as the following code in the onTimer event of the form:

    var-"vCountDown = vCountDown - 1
    vCountdown.refresh()
    vFormatedTime = totime(vCountDown,2,0)
    parentform:vTime.text = vFormatedTIme
    parentform:vTime.refresh()

    This assumes two variables being displayed on your form, vCountDown and vTime.

    Good luck,
    Jim

      Jim:

      Thanks for update.

      This is a trainer in preparation for a certification test. The student will have a fixed amount of time to complete the exam. I trying to show them how much time is remaining as they are taking the practice test.

      I've tried this but vTime will not display anything on the form. vCountdown displays and reduces fine. I've tried to set the variable as character with no format in both layout and session. Get the same results - no display. It would seem that this should work but I can't it to show me anything.

      If I do the totime(vcountdown, 2,0) as a calc field it displays properly but only changes the time format when I go to the next record on fetch_next() in my other script.

      I can't seem to get a character variable to increment on the form.

      Got to go out for the day I'll check in later. Again, thanks for your input.

      Bob

        Jim:

        Got the timer to work!

        Here's the code: (placed in the OnTimer event with the form time interval properties set to 1 second)

        Parentform:tm.refresh()
        var-"countdown=var-"countdown-1
        countdown.refresh()

        where var-"countdown is set to the number of seconds that you want (i.e. 5400 seconds = 1 hr and 30 minutes)

        and the calculated field on the form (calc-"tm) equals totime(var-"countdown,2,0)

        Thanks again for your help.

        Bob
