Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with forms

Hi I am trying to re-create an app I did in MS Access with Alpha 5 V6...
I am having difficulties doing the following... In access I can create unbound fields that show a drop down list from withch the user selects a status to update a record in another form (The main form)...

My problem is this, I created a main form witch shows the clients information... the user browses through that form and select a record...
For that record he can change the status of that record...
here is where i ran into trouble, when the user clicks on the btn change status, a form pops up...

The user selects a status and clicks OK btn...
But when he does, instead off changing the value of the status in the main form records (the client info)... it
changes it in the table that has all the statusid, and description... ex in that table I have

    OD out for delivery
    OC Order cancelled etc...

if I selct OC, then OD is changed to OC since it is first in the table and in the main form OC is put but then Out for delivery shows as status, when it chould be cancelled...

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Judith

    RE: Help with forms

i don't really follow you question fully.

but, an 'unbound field that shows a drop down list' in access would be done in a5 by defining a variable (click the V button on the form editor toolbar). then placing the variable on the form and setting its style to a list or combo box.

you should be able to accomplish exactly the same thing that you can do in access.

if not, just post your partially completed solution and we can help you.

      Judith,

show us the script on your "Change Status" button.

It's likely you simply need to refresh the display in your main form after the table field value is changed by the called form's selection.

        RE: Help with forms

On re-reading your post I see now that I may not have fully understood your situation. Are you saying that the called form is changing the field value in it's own table, and not in the table supporting the main (calling) form? If so, there are a number of ways this can be handled easily in Alpha Five.

For example, if you simply want to display a short list of choices and have the user pick one you can use ui_get_list(). Longer lists: ui_get_list_array()

Your btn script would display the list, collect the input from the user, and then assign the chosen item to the desired field in the current form. No need to open a second form at all.

          RE: Help with forms

yes the called form is changing the value in its own table...
The weird part is that it is changing the value to the 1st ecord to the value of the record i select in the drop down box...

              RE: Help with forms

Ok I changed my drop down box to a variable on the form and it worked thank Selwyn....

I just have one problem now, the form I open to change the status, once the user has selected a status he presses a button ok...
What this does is take the value of the varaible and updates the field in the main form...

              The problem is this:
Some times the status form tells me it does not find the main form...
I put an action scripting in the button, with the following
              -"Set field value
-"Set field valiu "OrderStatus" in form "Mainform"

In order to be able to selct the main form it had to be open in desing mode at the same time as the status form...

I did that but sometime the status form does not see it when I run the forms, I have to go back to design mode and edit the action scripting and then it works,

Is there a abetter way to do this
