Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Distance Calculator using Longitude/Latitude

    Hi Chaps,
    I need to build in to my A5a6 application a dialog Distance Calculator using longitude and latitude coordinates.

    A user will enter two Cities/Towns from a drop down selection field (from the same Continent) and the selection returns the Miles and Kilometres (a field for each)

    Has anybody had experience in working out the distance between Two points using the Great Circle Distances (as the crow flies) if yes I need your help!

    I have a table prepared with Long/Lat details just need a kick in the right direction so to speak

    Regards
    Andy

      If you search the archives at the Ask Dr Math forum (http://mathforum.org/dr.math/), you should find several different formulas that can be used to calculate the distance.

        RE: Distance Calculator using Longitude/Latitude

        Thanks Both,

        I know the Excel formulas - its the Alpha side I need the help with!!!

        Northern/Western Hems
        =RadiusEarth*ACOS(COS(RADIANS(90-(Lat1*24)))*COS(RADIAN(90-(Lat2*24)))+ SIN(RADIANS(90-(Lat1*24)))*SIN(RADIANS(90-(Lat2*24)))* COS(RADIANS(24*(Long1-Long2))))

        Eastern/Southern Hems
        =RadiusEarth*ACOS(COS(RADIANS(90-Lat1))*COS(RADIANS(90-Lat2))+SIN(RADIANS(90-Lat1))*SIN(RADIANS(90-Lat2))*COS(RADIANS(Long1-Long2)))

        I'll check out both your suggestions.
        Regards

          RE: Distance Calculator using Longitude/Latitude

          Your Excel formula is very close to the Xbasic you'll need. Take a look at the Xbasic functions acos(), cos(), dtor() and sin()

            Dr. Peter Wayne has code for this on his web site. I'm sorry, I don't have his web address at this time.

            I modified his code to call up an xdialog box so the user could enter airport's and get the great circle distance between them.

              OK,

              Very late reply, but thought I'd post anyway for the sake of the archive.

              lat1=latitude of point a
              lon1=longitude of point a
              lat2=latitude of point b
              lon2=longitude of point b

              (3958*3.1415926*sqrt((lat2-lat1)*(lat2-lat1) + cos(lat2/57.29578)*cos(lat1/57.29578)*(lon2-lon1)*(lon2-lon1))/180)

              Two things you need to know:
              1) All coordinates are expressed as decimals. If you have the coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds, you'll need to convert.

              Here's how:
              decimal equivalent = degrees+(minutes/60)+(seconds/3600)

              2) The answer is in miles. If you need it in KM, change the 3958 to 6378

              As you may have guessed this number represents the radius of the earth.

              Also - if you need data for major US cities, try:
              http://www.realestate3d.com/gps/uslatlongdegmin.htm

              I haven't played with the one from Dr. Peter Wayne, yet. http://www.learn alpha.com/GreatCircle/GreatCircle.htm

              But it takes it a step further and uses ZIP codes to get the longitudes and latitiudes.
