Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form titles behaving badly

    Hi,

Posted this a while back but wasn't able to get it resolved.

My app consists of a main menu form utilizing a tree-view and a conditional object with buttons that display depending on the selection of the tree. From the buttons, I run a script that loads a form.

The main-menu also has a menu and toolbar with options for the same items that are on the main menu. If I select to run a form from the main menu, the title in the loaded form is correct (i.e. User Maintenance). If run from the menu or toolbar, the title of the form displays like it's in development mode (i.e. User.dbf : Form View (UserMaint)).

Both the main menu form button and the menu & toolbar option/buttons run exactly the same Xbasic:

    script_play_local("RunUserMaint")

I changed it to script_play("RunUserMain"), but it didn't make a difference.

I can post the database if necessary.

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Jim,

Are you writing the form name to a string variable and then assigning it to the window title for each form as its opening?

      Tom,

No. It's set Captions field, Windows tab, Form properties.

if you post a small app that demonstrates the problem it will be helpful.

            Thanks Selwyn,

Use test/test for login/password. The main form has a toolbar that has two options. You can use the User Maintenance button. From the main-menu, expand Maintenance, select Users and then press the Users button at the bottom of the form. (ANy possibility of a double-click event on the Treeview? :")

Let me know if you have any problems/questions.

            Regards,

            Jim

it looks like a subtle bug.
              the work around is simple

as the last line in the 'runUserMaint' script, add this command:

              varP_UserMaint.window_title = "User Maintenance"

                RE: Form titles behaving badly

i spent some more time looking at your app.

                as you point out

                1. if the form is launched from a button on the mainmenu form, then the title is set correctly.

                2. if the form is launched from a toolbar button, then the title is not set correctly.

                3. when i created a new form and tried to see if i could repeat the problem, i could not.

                4. so, i tried to figure out how your form differed from my new form. i removed your onInit and onActivate code in the target form. it then works correctly. so the problem lies somewhere in either the OnInit or OnAtivate event code.

of course, the work around i mentioned in the previous message will work, but I was curious as to why it was necessary to work around what I would have expected to work in the first place.

                  Selwyn,

Thanks for looking at the issue. I had also tried using the debugger to see if something wasn't being set correctly, but I wasn't able to see anything that could be causing the problem.

Did you see anything in the OnInit or OnActivate code that may be causing the problem?

                    RE: Form titles behaving badly

                    Hi Selwyn,

I figured out where it's going wrong. The OnInit event of all my forms run a function to initialize a number of things. In that script, another function is run that sets the text on the status bar to the window title. Apparently, the title isn't set yet (I displayed a message box of parentform.window_title during OnInit and it was blank). Accessing the title attribute within the OnInit stage seems to be causing the title to display incorrectly.

The same script to set the status bar is run during the OnActivate stage so I can remove the reference in OnInit.

I'd say this is probably more a timing issue than a bug.

                    Thanks again,

                    Jim
