Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Importing File Name into Record

    I am building an routine in which, on a daily basis, I want to import several small text files into Alpha 5.

    The files will be placed into a predetermined directory, than at "X" time they would be imported into the database and deleted from the directory. I would also like the name of the file being imported copied into one of the fields in the DB.

    I have build the import piece no problem, however because I have limited xbasic experience I need help getting the file name into a field in the record and deleting the file after it has been imported.

    Can someone help me with this code?

    Thanks in advance.

    When you run your import you must know the file name
    For example; import_filename = "myimportfile.txt"

    All you have to do is

    open the table you want to record to the file name
    ex. t = table.open(import_table)

    fetch to the record you want to write to (if the table has more then one record)
    ex. t.fetch_goto(3) or use any other way to fetch to the record you want

    write to the field
    t.change_begin()
    ex. t.filename_store = import_filename
    t.change_end(.t.)

    close the table
    ex. t.close()

    delete the import file
    ex.
    if file.exists(import_filename)
    file.remove(filename)
    end if

      RE: Importing File Name into Record

      Thanks Daniel, I'll give it a try. Will the code you wrote handle multiple files? How does it step to the next file?

      What I had planned on doing is importing all the files in the directory. Some days there might be 5 files to import, other days there might be 100 files. So I would need code that reads (1) file at a time than deletes the (1) file and moves onto the next.

      Is my thinking correct?

          Is t kind of hard to explain exactly how to do it with knowing exactly what the rest of your code is
          But you can use this a guide

          Use the FILEFIND.GET() function to create a list of your files
          Ex.
          list= FILEFIND.GET("c:\myimportdir\*.*") see the help on how to use this function
          count1 = line_count(list) count1 = line_count(list)
          dim import_filename[count1] as c
          import_filename.initialize(list)
          for i = 1 to count1
          'put the import and all other codes in here
          'but insted of just using "import_filename" for the file names
          ' add the arrey # number to it as "import_filename[i]"
          next
