Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Duplicate parent/child record

    The "object".Duplicate_Record function allows you to duplicate the current record in a table. I want to not only duplicate the parent record but also the child records associated to it (in a set). Is that possible? The child record is in a browse object on the form, but when I try to copy the child, I get the following error: a5_browse_duplicate_rec object does not support requested interface.

    Xbasic Code:
    topparent.duplicate_record(1)
    topparent:Browse1.duplicate_record(0)

    Thanks.

    RE: Duplicate parent/child record

    Hi James,

    From what I am reading in the help files:

    Duplicate Record

    If you selected a form in step 3, optionally select whether you are working with the form (Parent Level) or with an Embedded Layout.

    You should be able to work with an embedded browse. I am wondering if the (0) is what is causing your problem?

    'Duplicate record in current form at Browse1 level.
    topparent:Browse1.duplicate_record(1)

    Good luck

      Cheryl,
      The error is generated when the parameter is set to 1 or 0 on the form browse.

      Any other hints?

      Thanks, James

        Can you attach a sample here and some steps so we can possibly duplicate it?

          RE: Duplicate parent/child record

          James,

          If I understand you correctly, you want to duplicate a parent record and all the child records associated with it. In that case, it is a little more difficult than simply duplicating records because you have to create the new linking field and the associations.

          In one of my apps, I have lists of people and sometimes want to crete a new list with the same people. I have the user first create the new list (parent) record, then use this script to copy the people (child) records to it:

          'This runs in a form with the list to copy from showing.
          'The linking field value "List_Id" of the new list is stored in a global variable
          Dim global vgToListId as C
          Dim vLastButton as C
          Dim vListId as C
          Dim frm as P
          Dim tbl as P
          Dim tbl2 as P
          Dim vMsg as C
          Dim vAnsr as N
          Dim vNum as N
          ' If there are no child records, send a message and quit
          vListId=table.current(1).list_id
          if .not. exist(vListId,"pers_list","list_ID")
          vMsg="There are no People in this List to copy."
          ui_msg_box("NO PEOPLE",vMsg,UI_INFORMATION_SYMBOL+UI_OK)
          end
          end if
          ' Show a dialog box to select the list_id of the list to copy to
          frm=:form.view("list_list","dialog")
          vLastButton=frm.last_pressed()
          select
          case vLastButton="CancelBtn"
          frm.close()
          end
          case vLastButton="SelectBtn"
          frm.close()
          ' tbl2 is the child table of the current set
          tbl2=table.current(2)
          tbl2.fetch_first()
          ' tbl is another instance of the same table
          tbl=table.open("pers_list",FILE_RW_SHARED)
          vNum=0
          ' copy the child records from the child table to the new instance
          while .not. tbl2.fetch_eof()
          tbl.enter_begin()
          tbl.list_id=vgToListId
          tbl.person_id=tbl2.Person_Id
          tbl.enter_end(.t.)
          vNum=vNum+1
          tbl2.fetch_next()
          end while
          tbl.close()
          end select
          ui_msg_box("COPY COMPLETE",vNum+" people were copied.")
          xbasic_wait_for_idle()
          topparent.resynch()
          topparent:persbrowse.fetch_first()
          end

            Cheryl,

            See attached.

            From the main menu, click Abstractor Rpt. On the Abstractor Browse, double-click any line item. The Duplicate record code is behind the "Copy and Add Record" button.

                Pat,

                I modified your code (to copy both parent and child) and it worked.

                Thanks again for the hint.
