Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Chart ActiveX without MS Office

Is it possible to create charts using ActiveX without having MS Office installed? I use OpenOffice.org and do not have MS Office (or any of its individual programs) installed. How can I use ActiveX to display charts?

RE: Chart ActiveX without MS Office

the sample apps that a5 ships to demo activeX support use the charting activeX control that is part of MS Office. so, if you don't have Office installed, you don't have this activeX control on your computer, and you therefore can't run the sample charting apps that we ship.

you will have to find some other charting activeX controls. you will also have to rewrite the demo apps that we ship because it is unlikely that these alternative activeX controls would use the same API (i.e. set of commands) that the Microsoft Office activeX controls use.

i don't know, you would have to contact Microsoft. My guess is that you could not.

          Howard,

This is a very good question. A whole lot of the world is trying hard to move away from having to have costly, buggy ans security hole prone MS products in order to do anything. Thus I think Alpha should have (and still should) try to find something other then MS Office to tie charting and graphing to. Of course one can do some charts and graphs with A5 and A6 alone, but having been there and done that I can tell you that it is quite a bit of work (time).

Ray, we have not tied charting and graphing to anything specific. We created an example of how to use ActiveX controls that happens to use the MS charting control. This is one of many graphing and charting controls available, you are free to use any ActiveX control you wish.

I've played a bit with Steema's (standalone) TeeChart Office (shareware) product ( http://www.steema.com/products/TeeChartOffice) and see that they also have an ActiveX version - I have no idea whether it would work - but if someone wants to check it out .... http://www.steema.com/products/teechart/ax/overview.html

Does anyone at Alpha know if we can use the TABLE.XML_EXPORT() function in conjunction with a program like that of Fusion Charts (http://www.infosoftglobal.com/FusionCharts/) to do charts without ActiveX?

RE: Chart ActiveX without MS Office

It look slike Fusion Charts requires a very specific XML data format. TABLE.XML_EXPORT() will not create that required format. However it would be fairly simple to create an Xbasic script that generates the required output since XML is just text.

                    Lenny -

I saw the demo that shows a line chart. I think this is exactly what I need, however, As I look at the code, I cant figure out where the rows/columns of data are defined. Is there a specific tutorial that you are aware of that will walk me through setting this up?

                        Alan -

We figured it out. AND ITS AWESOME!!! Here's the trick... You need to get the appropriate driver that allows Alpha to interface with the Active X control. The drive you need is for "standard foxpro v2.6 file format", which is what Alpha requires. Once the driver is installed we were able to point to our tables and create some amazing charts.

                        Good Luck.

                          Driver for which specific control?

Sounds like you should be writing the tutorial!

Thus far we are still testing the MS Office Chart 10 control, but the one we will eventually use is ChartFX from SoftwareFX, currently its the control we are using on our production SQL server. We should be testing this control more in the next 2-3 weeks.
