Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Warning Message Won't Go AWay

I keep getting the message "Are you sure you want to lose your changes" This is from the customer data table I can push yes or no and the message keeps popping up. I have to Ctrl.alt.delete. to get out of the program.

    thanks

I suggest you reboot your pc, and then determine whether the problem occurs using the default form for the table (available from the right click menu for the table, in the tables / sets tab of the control panel.

      Tom:

I put that whole folder aside for a minute and unzipped a backup I had did this morning.

The backup worked fine of course, until I did to it what I had did to the other one, add recno() and recount() fileds to the customer data table.

I went back and removed both fieds and it started working properly again.

      any suggestions?

      thanks

Nope, not in response to what you've described so far.

        Got any details?

"" until I did to it what I had did to the other one, add recno() and recount() fileds to the customer data table.""

You are trying to put A5 functions as a field? Please explain because this does not make sense to me. What exactly is the purpose of these fields? What are you trying to accomplish?

If you are trying to, for example, have the record number retrieved for a particular record, saved in a field, and then displayed on your form/browse/report, wherever ... you may want to try this:

Be VERY careful with your field name, do something like rec_number so as not to use any A5 names. Make sure the type is compatible with the recno() and your size is large enough to accommodate the possible number of records within the table.

Then use fields rules, make the field a calculated field, and create an expression that retrieves the record number of the current record and fills the field with that data. If you have existing records now you will need to re-evaluate the field rules to update those records.

            Julian,

It look to me like you are trying to use Alpha functions names as field names - BIG NO-NO! That, and using Alpha 'reserved words' (such as 'Print', 'Save', 'End') and Xbasic commands for field names will cause all kinds of grief, if Alpha lets you use them at all.

As was indicated previously, adding fields such as recdno (or recnum) and recdcount don't look like they will serve any purpose. Record count changes each time you add or delete a record and Alpha automatically keeps up with that; record number is just the order in which the record was entered and is automaticall genered as well.

Could you be thinking of something like customer number? If so, that it a whole different thing, depending on how you want it structured and if it is automatically incremented, or manually entered.

What I was really trying to accomplish is to be able to see

"record 8 of 83" if a query was run.

              thanks

                Julian,

Open Alphasports and go to the Customer form. Right click anywhere in the gray area of the form and select 'Find by Key', then click the 'Search by:' button and select '"Record-number order"'. Type the record number you want and it appears. Is this what you want?
