Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XPPRO TO SERVICE PACK 2

MICROSOFT IS PLANNING TO RELEASE THE UP DATE FROM WINDOWS XP PR0 TO XP PRO SERVICE PACK 2 NEXT WEEK. THEY DO NOT LIST ANY PROBLEMS FOR ANY OF THE ALPHA 5 VERSIONS ON THEIR SITE. IS IT SAFE TO ASSUME THAT THERE AREN'T ANY, AND IS SAFE TO GO THROUGH WITH THE UPGRADE.
    THANKS,

    MICHAEL

RE: XPPRO TO SERVICE PACK 2

There should be no problems with Alpha Five and SP2. If there are, we will fix them asap.

BTW, you might want to consider removing your caps lock. It comes across as shouting online and it makes messages very difficult to read.

      THANKS FOR THE INFO.

I GO BACK TO THE PRE DOS DAYS OF COMPUTING WHEN ALL WE HAD WAS UPPER CASE. I DO NOT SUSCRIBE TO THE NOTION THAT USING UPPER CASE IS TANTAMOUNT TO "SHOUTING". BESIDES THAT, I FIND IT MUCH EARIER TO READ IN ALL CAPS.

      THANKS,

      MICHAEL

        FYI

I recieved the following email from my brother that works for a very respectable company in Cincinnati. This email was sent to everyone in his company from their IT dept.

"For those of you who have Windows XP operating system installed, please do not install the SP2 upgrade. There are incompatibilities with XP SP2 and third-party applications. In fact, if you have automatic updates
turned on, you should disable this feature. The upgrade effects many third-party applications, firewalls, virus protect programs, etc."

Microsoft at this URL - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130

lists all sorts of firewall, antivirus, and other programs commonly used that have problems when SR-2 is installed. I've also read that some Microsoft programs (like Excel) may also be affected.

And, while KA2MSL does not consider all caps to be "shouting", most of the rest of the world does, so I guess we should keep that in mind.

Maybe I have been lucky, but the only problems I have had with SR2 involved Excel and Crystal Enterprise. With Excel, macro security was raised to high preventing some workbooks from running macros. Lowering it to medium will let you run the macros by clicking the enable button in the popup window. Since the internet firewall is enabled by default, it won't let the CE report server fill requests for reports. Turn it off or setup an exclusion.
I have been running the release candidate for about 6 weeks.

RE: XPPRO TO SERVICE PACK 2

SP2 is not something to stay away from. Just like any other update, you need to know what changes are included and test the update before deploying to all of your machines. I have SP2 installed on my main work computer and I use a lot of different apps and connect to a lot of different types of systems to do my job (network manager) and I have had zero problems in the last week and a half.

The problem that most people will have is dealing with the built-in firewall that is turned ON by default. You can turn it off, but I have left it on to see if it breaks anything. There has been nothing so far that I have not been able to do.

RE: XPPRO TO SERVICE PACK 2

                Hi Guys,

I guess part of the decision should be based on any argument in favor of installing SP2.
What is it bringing us that we do not have now in order for someone to take the risk of getting into trouble.

I must say, I am in this unholy computer world for decades now, and everytime it was said THIS release would be the ultimate in stability etcetera where in fact it just brought another kind of problems instead.
Everyone who has dealt with Windows for a long time can confirm this.

I do not think a firewall in Windows is worth the risk.
Most of us have firewalls running already.
So, why should we ? What is so very much improved that we should take the risk of hours and hours of data correcting and rescuing ?

                Marcel

RE: XPPRO TO SERVICE PACK 2

I agree with your statement that most are running their own firewall with one qualifier. Most in a "u"business"/u" environment run firewalls and anti-virus. The simple fact that there are still so many viruses, trojan horses, and god knows what else being propogated by unwitting victims of this crap, proves they have not taken the most simple steps to protect their machines. Always on broadband connection use by the general public has made this even worse. Before with dial-up you wouldn't dare leave the connection up to avoid racking up extra charges or tie up the phone line. Now, hackers have an endless supply of soldiers to launch attacks, and they don't even know they are being used. Microsoft should go further with anti-virus as well as a firewall, it would make the internet safer for all. Don't get me wrong, everyone should have free and easy access to anything the internet has to offer. But with that freedom comes the responsability to protect yourself, and at the same time protecting others. Didn't mean to get on a soapbox.
                  Safe surfing everyone!
