Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

it looks to me like you don't have the correct version of Internet Explorer installed on your machine.

The A5 html editor uses an activeX control that is assumed to be present on your machine.

What version of Internet Explorer is installed? Can you try installing the latest version from the Microsoft Web site.

RE: Startup and HTML editor errors

I've got IE version 6.0.2800.1106 with all updates via "Windows Update". No information on MS download site if this is the latest version. However, the available download stated I had the newest version. Are there any security settings in IE I need to relax?

You may need to lower the ActiveX security settings.

RE: Startup and HTML editor errors

if you open alpha five, and then go to the interactive window and then type

          dim p as p
          p = ole.create("dhtmledit.dhtmledit")

if this fails, then it is telling you that the 'dhtml edit' activex contol cannot be loaded.

I've now set the security settings in IE to "low", but it did not seem to help. Any exact setup of activex I should use?

RE: Startup and HTML editor errors

it seems like this activex control is not installed on your computer.

you could open the ole automation browser in a5 to check.

              select View/Ole Automation Browser

              select the "scriptable objects" category.

then select the 'programatic identifier' option in the Name category.

scroll down. do you see the 'dhtmledit.dhtmledit' control?

if not, that's the problem - however, if you don't have it on your machine, then I have no idea how this could happen. this control is meant to be part of windows once Internet explorer is installed.

RE: Startup and HTML editor errors

we have built a small installation program that installs the dhtmledit control in case it is missing from your computer. you can dowload this at

RE: Startup and HTML editor errors

                  Thanks for providing the installer.
When I tried to use the installer there was a request for C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Triedit\dhtmled.ocx

With the continued problems I decided to make a clean install of windows. After re-installing everything I've not encounted any errors in Alpha Five V6.

                  Thanks for the great support.

If you have the errors discussed above, you are running an older version of Alpha Five and you should download and install the latest patch
