Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Find by form, run find

What is the best way to put the actions of "find by form" and then do the equivalent of the "Find, run find" that is on the a5 menu within a form? I can locate the action "find by form" to assign to a button, but can't find the action "run find" in the list of actions that are available. Is there a function for this that can be attached tot he button? Am I approaching this the right way by haing one button for the "find by form" and then another to "run the find"? Thanks.

    David,

Look in the action scripting, Find/Locate.

David, did you find the script? It's under the Query in action scripting. Was late when I sent the 1st answer, which was, obviously, not correct.

RE: Find by form, run find

If you put the find by form button on your form, click that button you will be given the find by form toolbar at the top. There you should see the lightning icon and the Run command button.

The code behind that button is: SYSTEM_EXECUTE

I found that code by doing the following:

          Select the code tab
          New
          new toolbar
          find by form toolbar
          ok
run find is highlighted - lower left shows internal action

          Hope that helps.

I cannot find "SYSTEM_EXECUTE" as a code option if I try and just use this for the BUTTON PUSH action. So I'm still having trouble with this.

              DW -

Unfortunately you really are not giving enough information for us to provide you with more detailed assistance. The system_execute command worked great for me, I did receive an error when I pushed my button but that is because I did not have anything in my find by form to actually execute.

Exactly what do you have on your find by form button? Are you prompting the user at runtime for information? What is the actual end result that you are looking for?

If you give us a more detailed description of what you are trying to accomplish we can help a little easier :)

                Cheryl -

I have a command button on the form that performs the action of "find by form". This then blanks out the form, and information can be added in the blank form to look for.

Next, If I click on the "Run Find" button with the lightning bolt on the Alpha Five toolbar, it perform the find no problem - works just like I expect. Now, what I want to do is place a seconf button on my form that does the same exact thing as the "run find" button in the Alpha Five toolbar. I want to be able to perform the whole process from my form. I can't find an action in actuion scripting that corresponds to "run find" to assign to the button's "onpush" event.

This is what I'm trying to do. Is this a good explanation? How can I accomplish this? If I have to put the System_excute command in code, where is that entered? Thank you.

RE: Find by form, run find

Put the system_execute in the onpush event of the run find button that you placed on your form .... this of course has to be selected after they input the query data

If this does not work for you, please attach your files and provide us with the form name etc so that we can duplicate your errors and find a solution for you

I must be missing a step, maybe you can set me straight. Here's what I'm doing:
                    1. Place a command button on the form
                    2. Change the lable of the button to "run find" then click next.
                    3. I get the Xbasic editor
                    4. If I try to type in "system_execute" the autolist of funcitons doe not include this action
                    5.I click "finish" and "save"
                    6. I run the form, click on my "find by form button and enter the information for the search"
                    7. If I click on "run find" button, I get a message:

                    "missing or invlaid keyword"

I surmise that I'm not enterting the command in the right place, or the code is incomlete possibly?

Can you tell from this explanation what I'm doing wrong? Thank you.

RE: Find by form, run find

My guess is that it is not picking up your query. You need to take the information from your find and perhaps assign it to a variable, then place the variable in your run find button. I really need to see your code to give you any direction. Sorry.

DW - I would need the table that the form is designed on. If you zip all the table files the form information will be included. You should be able to attach that file here on the message board.
