Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't get browse edited browse table to work

    I created a browse table to my specifications. I set it up soit will launch from a form. But when I go toggle back and forth from the browse view to the form view the default browser comes up, whic hdoesn't help me. I want to be able to switch back and forth from my edited browser to my form. Also, in alpha 4 I was able to create macros by having the program memorize my keystrokes. Can you do something like that with Alpha 5.
    Thanks.

    RE: Can't get browse edited browse table to work

    you need to edit the form and the browse. go to form properties. form tab. set the name of the 'companion browse'. then edit the browse and set the name of the 'companion form'.

    then f8 will toggle you between the two.

    there is no keystroke recorder in alpha five because there is a full programming language, which is orders of magnitude more powerful than a keystroke recorder.

    for users who don't want to actually write the code themselves, there is action scripting. see the help files for an introduction to action scripting.

      Thanks a lot. Your solution worked great, but is there a way if I select a different browser, it will toggle back and forth, without going this procedure? Also, I would like to semiautomate my queries, so when I click on a button it will open the querry box, select the field I want to do the querry on, and slect equal and jump to the value box. I don't want the value preselected.

        hanson,

        ""is there a way if I select a different browser, it will toggle back and forth, without going this procedure? ""

        Sure, create buttons to take you hither and yon.

        I don't understand what you mean by:

        ""Also, I would like to semiautomate my queries, so when I click on a button it will open the querry box, select the field I want to do the querry on, and slect equal and jump to the value box. I don't want the value preselected.""

        Most anything is possible with Xbasic or using the Genies in the Code tab of the control panel.

        Not trying to be smart with you but I'm afraid youk won't get specific answers with general guestions. In other words, tell us "exactly" what you want to do and "why" you want to do it. I haven't a clue what you mean by "query box", is that query by table, query by form, the query genie or......

          In other words... How can I create a script that would automate a query that !) First goes to the Query box 2) selects the field I wish to search and 3)selects the eqals command. Thus the aonly thing I would have to do is insert the value I am search for, ie. particular date.
          Thanks.

            hanson,

            Still don't know what you mean by a query box but you can create a query that prompts for a value. Suggust you look at the queries in Action Scripting. Again, please do some review of Action Scripting documentation that comes w/A5. It will tell you how to do this.

              RE: Can't get browse edited browse table to work

              I agree that your descriptions are a bit vague so we can really only guess as to what you are trying to do or how. I have a form with nothing but buttons on it that queries a table based on certain search criteria and then returns the reports specifically for that search. This is used to show an invoice report.

              ie, I created an invoice report. I then created a form with the various search buttons. The user selects the search they wish on that form, ie search by last name, search by company, search by invoice date range ... the user is prompted for the data and then all invoices that apply to that search are returned in preview mode.

              Have no idea if this is similar to what you are trying to do, but if so, the code in my various buttons are as follows:

              'Date Created: 03-Aug-2004 06:30:48 PM
              'Last Updated: 05-Aug-2004 07:04:44 PM

              'Maximize in current form.
              topparent.maximize()

              'Print invoices based on last name
              filter = " (Last_Name = [varC-"prms.Parameter1] )"
              get_parameters_string = ""%string%

              ok_label = "&OK"
              cancel_label = "&Cancel"
              dialog_title = "Parameters"

              'Prompt for parameter values. Store results in a 'dot' variable called 'prms'
              dim prms as p
              prms = ui_get_parameters(dialog_title,get_parameters_string,ok_label,cancel_label)

              if prms.last_button_pressed = "OK" then
              'Replace parameters in the filter with actual values
              query.filter = replace_parameters(filter,local_variables())

              query.order = ""
              else
              end
              end if

              'Prompt user whether to print, or preview the layout. Set default to Preview
              prompt_result = ui_get_print_or_preview("Preview")
              If prompt_result = "Print" then

              :Report.Print("r_invoice",query.filter,query.order)

              Else if prompt_result = "Preview" then
              :Report.Preview("r_invoice",query.filter,query.order)
              End if

                RE: Can't get browse edited browse table to work

                Actually it sounds similat to what I am trying to do. I have a magazine sub business. I want to put a button on the form that will prompt me for a search on renewal date. Then I can input the renewal date I wish to use. the program then should return all the records for that renewal date, and finally merge with a letter, and be be printed.

                  Sounds exactly the same. The only change you need to make would be to pull a letter instead of a report.

                  here is what I have used for dates:

                  'prompt for beginning and ending dates
                  filter = " (Inv_date "= [varD-"prms.Parameter1] ) .AND. (Inv_date "= [varD-"prms.Parameter2] )"
                  get_parameters_string = ""%string%
                  Parameter1|Beginning date|Date|calendar||

                  Parameter2|Ending date|Date|calendar||
                  %string%
                  ok_label = "&OK"
                  cancel_label = "&Cancel"
                  dialog_title = "Parameters"

                  'Prompt for parameter values. Store results in a 'dot' variable called 'prms'
                  dim prms as p
                  prms = ui_get_parameters(dialog_title,get_parameters_string,ok_label,cancel_label)

                  if prms.last_button_pressed = "OK" then
                  'Replace parameters in the filter with actual values
                  query.filter = replace_parameters(filter,local_variables())

                  query.order = ""
                  else
                  end
                  end if
