Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Having problems filtering

Hello. I haven't had a chance to read through all of the topics so i don't know if this question has been previously posted and answered or not. But here goes...

I am trying to create a form that contains a browse with all the data from a table (i.e. a customer table) and also contains a combo box that lists all values from another table (i.e. a customer-type table). Basically, i want the "customer table" to be filtered based on what is selected in the "customer-type" combo box. So only the customers who are the selected customer type should come up in the browse. This is a task that was VERY easy for me to do in Access. But it is INCREDIBLY difficult for me to figure out in A5V6. If anyone has ANY guidance at all it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -G

I can't help you with the combo box. I use embedded browse objects instead. For this kind of thing I'd create a one-to-many set, with Customer_type table primary. I'd base the form on the set. I'd place an embedded browse object on the form for the child table, but not for the primary. As primary table records are fetched the browse object displays only linked records, thereby meeting your filtering criteria.

      RE: Having problems filtering

this is pretty easy to do in a5 as well.
it is different than access, but i am not sure that it is any harder.

i have attached a sample for you.

unzip this file and then add the tables to any database.

      there are actually two examples.

the 'demolist' form show how you can have a combo box that contains a list of states (a list of the unique state names in the customer table), and a listbox that shows the customers in the selected state.

the listbox shows the customer lastname, but stores the customer id. the listbox is populated dynamically in the comboboxe's onChange event.

both the listbox and combobox have ( on the choices tab when you edit their properties) their 'populate from option' set to "use xbasic".

the second example ('customerBrowse' form) shows how you can have an embedded browse (showing customers), with a combo box that has states. the value in the combo box controls the records that are shown in the embedded browse.

I have a form that has customer data and auto data in it. The auto id field is setup to display only the automobiles tied specifically to the customer entered previously in the form. From this list you can select which vehicle you want and the rest of the vehicle information fields are auto filled with that auto information.

I have accomplished this using field rules.

Thank you very much Selwyn. I'm all set now with this. The only problem i have now is that when i open the form, the combo box's initial value is 0. I would like it to start off being null. Any suggestions?

          Thanks.

the combo box is bound to a variable. just set the variable's value to some value that is in the combo box.

Also, just a side comment. This operation requires the writing of code in XBASIC, which is something that a non-programmer would have a hard time doing. For a program that boasts its incredible easy of use for non-programmers, the need for coding in this situation isn't very reassuring to me, as i'm beginning to suspect I might not be able to rely on action scripting and other simple non-code methods for some of the situations that may be common to me in my database creation. As someone who is still in the evaluation stage of the product, it is important for me to fully understand just how "non-programmer friendly" this is.

              Thanks.

                Gary,

I daresay most non-programmers wouldn't know what a combo box is. They'd probably follow the approach I outlined earlier in the thread, using a form based on a set of tables. The interface is somewhat different than what you're shooting for but the practical result seems very similar. Using this approach the user fetches or navigates to the desired primary table record, and the browse object displaying field values from the linked child table updates automatically. -- tom
