Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I can't get to runtime version to work on 2000 Professional. It hangs up after "initializing" shows on the status bar and disappears.

          Thanks,

I didn't find anything useful, except that I'll remove Word and reinstall or maybe just leave it off - I'm a WordPerfect user and find WordPad a better option for RTF files.

I upgraded from Millenium to Win 2000 Pro on this particular machine, so that may be part of the problem. I wanted to use my apps on more machines than two (main and laptop) so I got V6 runtime. It works fine on XP Home and Pro.

Please confirm that you have the latest build of Alpha Five. You can do this by going to the help menu and choosing "Check for New Version."

I have the newest version, except that I can't get to the help menu. It doesn't go that far. I did run the patch. I get eleven blue squares before it hangs if that means anything.

Mark, if you did have at any time a copy of office 2000 on that machine, do a search - Selwyn posted a way to deal with it - it has something to do with an acknowledged bug in Word/Office, but that is a real pain to get rid of.

Mark, read that thread carefully, and query some of its correspondents. I recall that how you installed it was the issue - the way you answered a specific question.

Booting in safe mode - no effect.

I'll try a "pure" Windows 2000 machine (one that was installed from scratch, not an upgrade) and see what that does.

Tried a "pure" Windows 2000 machine - still hung at 11 squares.

Oddly enough all my other software works, though there is not much of it on this machine. It's mostly an A5 machine.
Poor machine, 98 to ME to WIN 2000 to XP Pro. It's been through the wringer.

GAVE UP - upgraded to Windows XP Professional - works fine now. I am getting the "WORD" bugs, but I know how to fix those.

Sorry this story didn't have a happy ending, but now I can get my work done.
