Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Entering new records in set in "form manner" not in browse

I presently have a form based on a set with an embedded browse.
The parent table of the set is site information.
The child table is invoice information for the site.

Rather than input new invoice information in a browse I would like to input the info either in "Form format" in existing form or in a new form accessed from button.

When trying the existing form option
I click on new record in the browse
The fields in the form where I want to input the new information clear as expected but when I click on the fields to input info the previous values return.

When trying the new form option I am not able to open the new form with focus on the parent (site) and all other fields clear, ready to accept new information.

I know its a basic question but help would be appreciated.

    Thanks robert

Consider a set's structure and its representation on the screen. The embedded browse is a list of the child records linked to the current parent.

If you add a record in the browse, or a form for that matter, you are automatically linked to that parent and if you change any parent values you change them for all linked records.
    There can be only one.

Yes Stan I understand the concept concerning the child parent links.

In the form with parent information shown in "Form manner" and child info in browse manner it is straightfoward to add a new record in the browse by clicking the new record button.

I was just wondering if there was any way in which new child info could be added to a "focused" parent record but in a "Form" manner.

Yes Stan that is exactly what I mean. I'll look at your xbasic script in detail to see if I can fathom out what it is doing. I'm a complete novice at xbasic and was hoping that the answer might lie in action scripting somewhere.
          Well done and thanks again.

Don't give up on action scripting

it might but I don't use action scripting that much. You'll probably get better suggestions.

              Action Scripting Example

              Robert,

I've added a button to Stan's form, to show you how one might do the same thing using only Action Scripting.

Let me know if you have questions.

If you use a seperate form - life is pretty easy, however If you want to do data entry on the same form as the browse , I normally find it it best to define session variables to hold the input and then code the save event to write the values of the input fields into the current session of the database (ie: with pointer obtainsed via table.get()

If you do this you also need to populate the values from each variable , using the onfetch event for the parent and onrowchange event for the browse

Thank you Tom, Stan and Mike for presenting me with a different approach to solve the same problem. I'm glad in a way that the solution in fact was not as simple as expected and therefore not so embarrased about posing the question in the first place.

I'm going to persevere with the solution that Tom put forward using the action scripting as I am not sufficiently knowledgeable in xbasic to pursue the other options.

I would also add that the small sample created by Stan and amplified by Tom is for me an exellent way of gaining further knowledge as it gives me the opportunity to change and experiment and learn the logic behind both approaches. Thanks again to all.
