Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why isn't my app publishing?

    Hello,

I just can not figure out why I'm getting this error message when I attempt to publish to our server: The target folder, blah blah blah does not exist...create one? (I indicate YES, and then get another error message of: Can not create the folder, blah blah blah.

I will try to give you all the details you need to help me figure out which "T" I didn't cross or "I" I didn't dot - dang, this is frustrating. I've gone over all the Help I can find, the tutorial, message board threads, all to no avail in getting the files published.

Particulars of the Web Project Profile:
    Publishing to the LAN
    Alias: [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = d:\a5webroot\Phone_Test
[DataAlias] = D:\a5webroot (Note: a space before and after each "=" sign.)
    Webroot: \\alpha\d\a5webroot
    Target folder: Phone_Test
    Publish data files: True
Files to publish: (I've checked all the data files)
    Folder: \\alpha\d\Phone_Test (I've also tried D:\a5webroot\Phone_Test\)
Base URL: http://alpha (yes, the IT guy who is running the WAS named the server "alpha")
Server Port: 8081 (yes, this is verified as correct.)
    Default page: Assigned_Phones.a5w

The WAS is configured as such:
    Server name: Alpha
    Server port: 8081
    Document root: D:\A5Webroot
    Page extension: .A5w
    Default page: index.a5w
    html.a5w

Also, the path D:\a5webroot\Phone_Test exists on both the development pc and the server pc.

Anything I'm leaving out? I'm out of here for the day, but hope someone can spot the problem and let me know, soon.

    Thank you so much!
    Wanda

The profile settings are detailed at http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...ct_Profile.htm

The folder setting is relative to the webroot setting. So with your settings, you are trying to publish to the folder \\alpha\d\a5webroot\\alpha\d\Phone_Test, which is not a valid UNC path.

    Assuming that
    • "d" is a valid share on the server "alpha"
    • the share "d" on "alpha" maps to the path "d:\" on the server
    • your server's webroot is d:\a5webroot
    • you want your files to ultimately end up in d:\a5webroot\Phone_Test
    You would use
    • webroot: \\alpha\d\a5webroot
    • folder: Phone_Test

Thanks, Lenny. I made the change of:
folder: Phone_Test, and I'm still getting the error message that the folder doesn't exist - create one? Yes. Then it says it can't - no hint as to why it can't. I'm not sure, however, that the drive d is "shared" - didn't know it had to be. I do know that the folder has to exist both on the development machine and on the server machine.

What does that mean? What is a UNC path?

I will take a look at your other link to "Profile settings detail".

I'll post my results to this thread.

      Thanks, Lenny.

Okay - I've restructured several things and have the page launching only the search part of the first grid. There are 3 grids in this GridLinker.

I've shared out the D drive on the server machine, and mapped it to my production machine via Drive Z. When I publish, I see the search part only, and get this message:

Error 3 - The system cannot find the file specified. d:\a5webroot\Phone_Test\Employee.dbf

I'm also still getting the error message about the "Phone_Test" folder not existing and would I like it created. I answer Yes. Then I get the message that it can't create one. Fine. There really is one already created. Is this a bug? Telling me it can't find or create a folder that is already there?

I'm getting closer - I can almost taste it!

        Please and thank you!

Double-check your settings and confirm that is where your DBF has been published.

Also, it is a very bad idea to store your DBF within the webroot. Doing so would allow full unrestricted access to your table. You should instead store the DBF(s) in some folder outside of the web root. This is why the profile allows you to specify a different path and alias for the data files.

The really odd thing is that my data files are NOT in the webroot folder or any sub-folder of the webroot. In fact, I'm not even using "webroot", anyway. I'm using a folder named, "alpharoot", instead. The data fiels are in S:\Phone_Sys folder. So, why is it looking in A5Webroot for ANYTHING?

I've changed the alias and the profile setting to reflect "alpharoot" as the webroot. It's as if it's hung up on a previous setting that no longer exists, or something.

              Now what?

              Thanks, Lenny.

It will look in [PathAlias.ADB_Path] for youtr DBF files. Above you said you had this set to d:\a5webroot\Phone_Test, so you'll need to change this so it knows where to find your DBF

Apparently, the dbf files are NOT being published. Why? They are what makes up the grid field names, etc. I've looked through everything - profile-wise, and can not see any reference whatsoever to D:\a5webroot.

Could there be a hidden problem with a profile holding onto something that was previously set, but has since been changed?

                    Lenny,
I've changed the path alias and the data alias. The data is in the S:\Phone_Sys folder. I set the pathalias to = \Phone_Sys and the data alias to S:\Phone_Sys

It is still trying to find the data where it never was in the first place, although I had originally had the path alias incorrectly set to D:\webroot.

Is it hung up? Do you want me to zip it and send it to you?

                    Thanks,
                    Wanda

                      Have at it, please!

I'm going to attempt to zip the files and post them to see if anyone can see why the project is trying to publish to d:\a5webroot\Phone_Test\Employee.dbf

I'll be away until Tuesday and will not be able to respond until then. Thank you everyone who is trying to help me!

                      Sincerely,

If the first zip file doesn't work, try this one, please.

BTW - I'm still getting the message about not being able to create the Phone_Test folder. The folder DOES exist, so I'm feeling pretty sure I've somehow uncovered a bug. Lenny? Can you take a look at this zip file, pretty please?

Gracias! I'm out of here. TGIF!

Thank you very much, all you kind souls out there!
