Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Master Password

    Hi All,

Ok, I'm in a pretty bad position now. :(

The master password for one of my app's does not open the app any more and I do not know why. Not even the passwords of the users working on the app is working.

This is the master password for this app. It is dotted down on my blueprint for this app. This I am sure of.

I also restored a previous backup of the app. No use.
I cannot import the tables to a new database, because it is encrypted.

Is there a way out, or is my feeling about this correct??

    Thanks
    Walter

Hi Walter. I can sympathise with you on this one. It hasn't happened to me yet but I have come close on a number of occasions where I have come close to losing important information because a password stops working.

I think the question you are asking is this: is there a way to break into an A5 encrypted table without knowing the password that was originally used to encrypt it. I don't know the answer for sure but I would think the answer is no. Otherwise what's the point in encrypting a file. But someone at Alpha Software may have some suggestions.

There are a few things that may help, apart from the obvious ones. I think from memory the A5 encryption password is case sensitive so maybe the caps lock key is inadvertently on - no, silly suggestion. OK, so now it may be worthwhile working backwards. When was the last time the password was successfully used to decrypt the table? What has changed since then? Different PC maybe, different keyboard, different version of A5. Is it possible to go back to the same configuration as was last successfully used to decrypt the file? Did someone change the password without your knowledge?

I'm not sure what else to suggest really. But I hope this helps.

      Hello Brett,

      Thanks for the reply,
I gave this up as a lost case. The only thing I have is the saved scripts.
Luckily for my blueprint. Every tbl, frm, rpt design is on there.

The only thing I could think of was when I had to shut down Alpha(not responding) after running a big import operation.

I was looking for a reason why the security file got corrupted. Something must have happened with the forced shut down.

This must have been fixed when I restore my previous backup, but it also did not fix the problem. Al my other app's are working fine though. It is just this one that is giving the headache.

Now I can also say I know how it feels like!!

      Have a nice day
      Walter

If you send me your database, I can break into it and change your password for you. That's one of the perks of having written some of the security framework. ;)

That being said, I very seriously doubt that your password was corrupted, *especially* since you said a restore of the old adb/alb files didn't solve the problem.

Re: Master Password not working after crash...

Hello Aaron, Walter's post reads like I wrote it! After a forced crash my Master failed to work, too. Will you help? Please reply asap, but I will be out of touch (camping) from 7-16 through 7-31-2010. Thanks for any assistance :-) Denny ST

            Denny,
Aaron has not worked for Alpha now for over 2 years I believe so doubt he will be answering you regarding this.

I suggest emailing Alpha directly in order to perhaps contact someone who can help you....

              Re: Master Password

I do not use the db password system. Not knocking it, but I had a similar problem(sure it was my fault). I do encrypt several tables that have sensitive data. I use my own security otherwise.

                Re: Master Password

                Hi Guys,

I initially thought it was a corrupted .ad* file - but I was trying the wrong password - did not want to admit it that time !!

Since then, also am using a combination of Alpha security and my own - and - keep the master passwords safe.

Good luck with sorting the issue - double check your master password first, especially if you are able to restore to a previous backup copy.

                Regards
                Walter
