Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What are the icons on the thread list?

OK, I give up. I've spent way to much time looking for the answer so maybe somebody else can inform me....

What do those "envelope icons" on the left edge of the thread list mean? Most are blue, some are red, some have arrows going in, some have arrows going out, some have paper sticking out of them, and I've probably missed a couple other combinations. They're neat but what the heck do they mean and how are they being set?? In other words, what value are they to us users?

Scroll to the very bottom of the page and you will see them explained just above Posting Rules. They are not all explained but most are.

The only thing I see above "Posting Rules" on my screen is:
      - When viewing a thread - a box for "Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread"
      - When posting a message - the "Topic Review" boxes.

Apparently there's another setting I haven't found. And, in case there is any doubt, I'm not talking about the smilies or avatars - just the various "envelopes" that appear only on the list of thread topics.

Sorry I should have said when viewing the list of threads in a forum not an actual thread.

Duhhhh! Yup! There it is - right where you said it was. (Would you believe I just had my eyes checked about a month ago?)

I guess I'm still curious what qualifies as a "hot" message. It doesn't appear to be just the activity level because there are hot threads with fewer messages than other "non-hot" threads that were created about the same time.

Seems to me that a hot topic is one that has been viewd over 150 times. It does not seem to be based on the number of replys.

If you hold your mouse over the icons at the bottom, they will give you a brief explanation. The hot icon says 15 replies of 150 views makes the thread hot.

OK guys, that's enough of trying to make me look stupid. (Or, did I do that myself?)

Actually, I found it kind of interesting that somebody recently asked me to move some buttons from the bottom of a web page to the top because "people tend not to check the bottom of the page." Then I did exactly the same thing myself here.

You guys don't celebrate October 13th in the UK? ;)

Seriously though, this will depend on your web browser and how it is configured. The description is in the "alt" text for the image and some browsers do not show it by default.
