Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Displaying Session Variables on web page

    I want to display session variables on a page similar to the welcome on the forum. I have an html line

    Welcome:  <%a5 ? session.BECKDB.user_name %>

    Although I can't find any reference to it the ? seems to be a print command but in this case it doesn't work. The "Welcome " shows up but not the session variable.

    Yes, the "?" is the output operator. Are you sure your variable holds a value?

      Hi Lenny
      the following is set in the top of the index.htm after checking to see if they are logged in
      <%a5
      session.BECKDB.UserName = "Guest"
      session.BECKDB.password = "guest"
      session.BECKDB.country=request.Accept_language
      session.BECKDB.last_here=date()
      &>

      The code in the first message is in the body of the same page.
      I also tried to add the sample shown on the A5w_info() reference and got the message "A5w_info is shown below" but there is nothing after it.

      Adding the sample to the bottom of my page also screwed up the editing of the page. The page would preveiw OK but if I opened the page for editing I got what appears to be a new page and a blank WYSIWYG page. Close the edit and use open with note pad and all the code is there. Remove the sample and everything is back to normal.

        Does your page really have the .htm extension or is it a .a5w extension? It must be .a5w (unless you've changed from the default configuration) in order for the Xbasic code to be executed.

          Please make sure that your closing delimiter is %>, not &> as you typed above.

            Sorry Aaron that was a typo in the message.

            I've got it working however under normal conditions when you enter a site you get INDEX.HTML. Will INDEX.A5W do the same job?

            Also can I generate an HTML page and rename it to A5W?. I'm using an external program to develop some of the pages that don't have web components on them but I would like to have the same header on every page and the header displays session variables.

            Thanks for the help so far.

              With the Web Application Server, index.a5w will be displayed if it is present. WAS will not process the a5w code if the file is named .html or .htm. It must be .a5w if there is xbasic in it. This is true of all server-side scripting languages, such as a5w or PHP.

              You can generate an HTML page and rename it a5w if you like. Without the <%a5 %> tags, everything is treated just like html.
