Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha crashing on one CPU all the time.

I could not find this in the search so I posted new.

On one CPU in our office Alpha crashes all of the time. If he leaves Alpha to read an e-mail and then go back to it, Alpha will crash. We've reinstalled the application and the latest patch twice. He has virus protection running and I defrag once a week. Any ideas what I can do to stop this? He is very upset.

    As always- Thank you!

    Lori

P.S. We run Windows XP home, he has 1G of ram. Office 2003, and alpha runs from the server running 2003 as well.

    Lori, more information is needed.

    What does

... and alpha runs from the server running 2003 as well.
    mean, exactly?

Is he logging on to the server and running Alpha Five there?
Is he running Alpha Five locally, but opening the database on the server?
Is he running Alpha Five locally, opening a shadow copy of the database locally?

Does he have other networked applications that use the server successfully?

Also, describe what happens when the crash occurs.

      Alpha crashing on CPU

He is logging onto the server to run Alpha but the application is installed locally on all the machines. The shadow databases didn't seem to work at all and caused more problems than they solved.
We use the server to store files mostly, although QuickBooks is running off the server fine and other machines run fine off of the server. It appears to only to crash on a regular basis.

When it crashes, the application locks up and he needs to force quit the application. He will be working in his e-mail and when he goes back to Alpha, the screen is white and it does not work.

      Does that help?

        Alpha Crashing - Hyperthreading?

        Hi Lori,

Alpha should be on the desktop machine, not the server. The application can also be on the desktop, but if others are using the same application I would recommend putting the application on the server. Then Alpha on the Desktop can open and access the application on the server.

Another thing to consider - does the desktop computer use an Intel processor, and is Hyperthreading turned on? I have seen instances where Hyperthreading can cause some problems. And on the other hand I have seen instances where Hyperthreading did not interfere with Alpha. So that is something else to consider.

        Have fun.

Alpha is on the desktop CPU's. The database is on the server and the local machine launches it using the local install.

          Does that help?

I've had crashing problems due to an incorrect field rule. Might be something to check out - particularly calculated rules.
Also, do the crashes happen only after one particular table or database is opened, or after a particular report or operation is run? I assume you've compacted the database and updated indexes? Are your filters working properly?

Try logging the events that lead up to a crash, besides going into the email and see if you find a pattern.

Just a few ideas for you. Good luck!
            Wanda
