Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ui_get_text Not Working?

    Using build 3862-2063

    Typing this
    Code:

    ui_get_text("Name Required","Please Enter Your Name","","llllllllll")
in to the interactive editor pops up the dialog, but you cannot type anything in to it. However, if you paste some text in to the box it does accept it. I first encountered this in build 3810-2058. This appeared to be fixed in subsequent builds until now.

Going back a patch made it work - reinstalling the new patch it didn't.

This works for me. There is something strange going on with your machine. Do you have any other machines on which you could test this?

The function does work as long as there is no format_string specified i.e

          Code:

          ui_get_text("Name Wanted","Please Enter Name","","")
This did and still does work in patch 3856-2062.

I've now tried this on 4 different PCs, different video cards, memory configuration, software loaded, processor speed.

Any further suggestions would be most welcome.

I tried it exactly as you specified above and it works correctly for me.

In your example, you specified to only allow lowercase letters, so only lower case letters can be typed in.

Chris, this works just fine for me as well, both with and without the format string. Are you aware that your format string only allows letters to be input? If you are trying to enter numbers, they will not be accepted. If you review the documentation for ui_get_text(), the format strings are explained.

                    Aaron, Lenny

Yes, I was aware of the lower case. I have tried all the different format_string combinations.

has anyone noticed the improvement in the ui_get's

in 4.00 thru 4.5 and in 5.0 they responded to the ENTER key, whereas they stopped in V6, and required using the mouse. Now the ENTER functioanlity is back - very good news!!

test this in V5, V6, and V7 (entering something and then pressing ENTER): temp=ui_get_text("","")

I have now uninstalled v6 Full & Runtime from this PC, deleted the registry keys for v6, deleted a5v6/a5v6runtime folders, cleaned out prefetch folder, rebooted.

uninstalled v7, removed v7 registry keys, removed alpha five printer, and removed a5v7 folder, cleaned out prefetch, rebooted.

                        Installed v7 beta again, rebooted.

ui_get_text() now works as it should.

I tend to think that there is some sort of conflict here with v6 and/or v6runtime.

                          An update to this problem:

I've finally narrowed the problem down to the International Setting in Preferences.

If it is set to YES, then the UI_GET_TEXT() works properly, if it set to NO, I can't type anything in.

I have tested this now many times and is repeatable.

Interesting. Thanks. But why would you set this setting to No?

The default for this setting is Yes and I can't think of any reason why a user would set this to No other than for debugging purposes to find out if some behavior which was observed in an older version of A5, that is no longer being observed, was due to this setting.

I prefer to know which settings I have in the preferences, so I select them (rather than them showing a blank). I had inadvertently selected this option to NO in the beta version, which was giving me the original problem. I was going through all the preferences deliberately, because before I set them, the UI_GET_TEXT worked.
