Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

ODBC Import error-"defined record is too long"

    Greetings,

While doing a ODBC import from an Excel File that is about 24,000 lines I get the error message in the subject. Is it specifying the total record length, a fields length or what????

It appears to habe most of the file imported, over 600MB worth at least.

    Regards,
    Keith

Just for kicks, you might try downloading the v7 beta and use the new ADO Import Genie to import your data. It will be replacing the ODBC Import Genie.

      Aaron,

Is there any chance that installing V7 along side V6 will cause any problems? I am on the road and cannot afford to have my notebook messed up. Otherwise I will have to wait till the weekend when I'm back home again.

There should be no problems. I have them both installed on my computer along with v5, v4.5, and v4.

          One other thing noted...

          Aaron,

When I save the file from Excel (48MB file) as a:

          dbase-III file it was 176MB
          dbase-IV file is was 255MB

when using the ODBC Genie is blew up at ~622MB. I suspect something got hosed and it was looping on garbage. After getting the error message I posted, pressing the OK button would result in an "Error 1" and A5 would close.

          Regards,
          Keith

I don't have any advice on the ODBC Import Genie. There are a number of reasons why we replaced it.

              Compatibility V6 and V7

              Aaron,

If I load V7 and use the new import functionality, will I be able to reopen the DB with V6 or will it be incompatible after creating with V7?

The formats are identical. You can import with v7 then use it in v6.

                  Aaron,

Well V7 and the ADO module failed, too !!
THe input file is 48MB so it is not just easy to send it to you but V7 does not work any better than V6 did.

Can you be more specific than "failed"? Did you get an error message? I can fix the ADO Genie if you can ftp the data to our site.

                    You can FTP to

                    Upload to the "incoming" directory.

                      Aaron,

it just goes to sleep, no error messages, nothing. There is quite a bit of disk I/O as I would expect, it comes to an end and A5V7 just hangs. Ends up taking many attempts thought the Task Manager to get A5V7 flushed out. The conversion table "does not" seem to get built, no disk space seems to get allocated either.

I am going to see if Ican split the file down much smaller and duplicate the problem so I can send you something reasonable to play with. Probably, won't happen before tomorrow as I am going to be traveling today.

                      Regards,

                        same problem

Now that my IT department is very disappointed at the inability to write reports in the WAS, using external data, (and thus MY reputation on the line), I am attempting to import the data (which we really didn't want to have to do, because exporting it back may be a problem). I'm getting the exact same error message, and yes, I'm using the V7 beta version.

Has this problem been fixed recently? Does anyone have a fix for it?

                        Thank you,
                        Wanda

                          Wanda,

I need more information. What is the error you are receiving, are you using the ADO Import Genie? If so, can you post a picture of the screen where you are receiving the error? You say "external data," but where is the data coming from? Access? Excel? MySQL?

As always, *details* are necessary to solve any problem.

Thanks, Aaron. Please see the attached screenshot of the error. Also, there's a screenshot of the records displaying in "Preview".

The data is from a MySQL server. Yes, I'm using the ADO Import Genie.

                            Thank you,

Oh - two screenshots create too large a file. Here's one.
