Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How many records are in that table?

Also, rather than creating a word file, and cutting and pasting the images into Word, then posting a Word DOC file attachment, it makes more sense to cut and paste the images into Microsoft Paint, or other image software (I like IrfanView) and attaching the images as images. This way, a thumbnail is created and it doesn't require opening a separate program.

Thanks for the tip on saving to Paint...Never used Paint, and don't even know if I have it, but will check it out.

The table I'm attempting to import has 902 records. Aaron, I managed to get it to import the first field, which is probably numeric. I added one character field to the field list to be imported, and got the error message again. I also tried to import just one character field, and got the error message.

        Thanks,
        Wanda

What do you mean? I know virtually nothing about MySQL, but spoke to the IT person who does, and he indicated that the file will have numeric and character fields, as well as date fields (and probably others).
            Thanks,
            Wanda

I need to know what the definition of the fields are in the MySQL database. MySQL has more than just "numeric", "character", etc. Is it a Varchar? If so, what is the size?

Ideally, it would be nice if you could send me a mysqldump of the database, so I can test with the data directly.

                Hi Aaron,
Our IT Person who hopefully can answer this question is out to lunch right now. I'll try to catch him post haste. Providing all the data is not an option, as there is confidential information that by law, I can not give out.

Please stay tuned. Thank you - Wanda

Even providing just the structure would be helpful.

Sort of. What would be most helpful is if he ran a mysqldump of the table with the "-d" or "--no-data" flag, and then sent me the resulting SQL. That way, I can recreate the table structure on my machine here.

the command would look something like
                      mysqldump -u user -p password -d mydatabase > sendtoaaron.sql

Thank you, Aaron, for working so hard and diligently on this! I will beg and plead and try to talk our IT tech into doing what you're asking - although yesterday I was put on a new assignment to evaluate other web-based design software, and scrap the WAS...(mostly due to the inability to create reports on/from the WAS with external data - a major brick wall).

                        Sincerely,
                        Wanda

                          Hi Aaron,

I jost spoke with the IT tech, who is not willing to spend any more time on these problems, unfortunately. I hope you find a fix, anyway, as I'm not sure we'll find another program for me to use, given another huge learning curve.
                          Sincerely again,
                          Wanda
