Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating a Session Variable when Clicking on a Link??

The following is copied from the help file.

Creating a Session Variable when Clicking on a Link
The following URL opens the Showsubscriber.A5w page with the filter expression edit_sub_filter=Acct_Id={Acct_Id}. In addition, it creates the session variable session.CurrentSubAcct set to the value found in the Acct_Id field.

    Showsubscriber.A5w?edit_sub_filter=Acct_Id={Acct_Id}&CurrentSubAcct={Acct_Id}

    My code is as follows

    View.a5w?decend_disp_box_link_1c=Key={Key}&reclink={key}

the link is followed but reclink is not created as a session variable. Why?? Is it the fact that I'm using a link instead of a filter?

The help file is incorrect. You need to use

    View.a5w?decend_disp_box_link_1c=Key={Key}&session.reclink={key}

Thank you very much. This may solve my other problems from messages posted re linking to gridlink pages.

        Not in index

        FYI

Creating a Session Variable when Clicking on a Link is not in the index of the help file. I found it by accident by doing a search on link session

I'll ask Ed to address this. Thanks.

              In a Navigation component

I tried to use this approach in a navagation component, but it gave an error. Is setting a session variable in the link in a navigation component supported?

Pat I dropped that idea because it was too combersome and also found a better way. Check out http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=57189

If you have any questions let me know

on the nav bar just set the url as you would normally.

P.S. How do you get the thumbnails. I have figured that one out yet

The error is being caused by my use of quotes around the constant value. I tried changing the value to session.vsLi_Id=quote(Clients) and that eliminated the error, but it also doesn't work.

So, the question is now, how do I assign a constant character value without the use of quotes?

About the thumbnails, I don't know. It happens automatically....must be magic!

Pat Are you still trying to set the Nav bar or are you refering to the ink field on the source grid?

If you are refering to the source grid, then in the destination grid link overides you have to insert DBF.filter="Clients="+quote(session.vsLi_id)

This on the definition of the grid link builder. Click on the parent and click EDIT then click OVERIDE Settings the add the above.

By the way I wasn't refering to how you got the thumbnail, I was refering to how did you get the screen shot

                      Bob,
There are a number of screen capture programs. My wife uses SnagIt, but I use PrintScreen from Gadwin Systems, www.gadwin.com.

Here's what I'm trying to do...
In my business, my suppliers, my customers and my competitors can all be the same company. So, I created one company file and use lists of companies to find what I want. So, for example, if I want to see a list of clients, I go to the list named "Clients". If I want suppliers, I use the list named "Suppliers". All use the same company file.

Now, it would be easy to make separate components and pages for each list, but I thought, "Why not use one page and just change the titles and the filter based on a session variable?" So I did.

In version 6, I made a poor man's navigation system using a dialog component with dropdown boxes, and, based on the selection, would set session.ListName to "Clients", or whatever, and call the page. Works fine.

Now in version 7, I am trying to do the same thing in the Navigation component. I just want to select the menu option "Select Client", set the session.ListName to "Clients" and go.

Maybe that's too cute and I should just create a bunch of separate pages???

                        Pat 2 things.

                        1. At the bottom of an a5w destination page I insert
                        <%a5
                        a5w_info(.f.)
                        %>
to show the session variables. This way at least you know what was defined.

                        2. Thanks to my ignorance when checking to see if when this was applied to the menu.
                        guest_list.a5w?session.name=quoted(BOB)
it worked just as you said but session.name was defined according to A5W_info(.f) as quoted(BOB)
So what the heck I tried this
                        guest_list.a5w?session.name=Bob
and session.name now is defined as BOB.
Apparently either the menus don't interpret quoted() or a session variable just converts anything after the = sign as a string.

                        I hope this helps

                        Bob
