Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Multiple records showing in set browse.

    Hi,
I have a set with 3 tables: cliname, clifirmlink, firmname. Parent, child, grandchild. It is to show the relationship between employees and their firms.

cliname is the parent, linked to clifirmlink one to many on clinumber field.
clifirmlink is linked to clifirm one to one on firmnumber field. I think that this is the correct method in this situation.

When looking at the set default browse there appears many many instances of multiple records of the cliname info.
When looked at the individual tables for the records where there are mulitiples in the set there are no multiple records in cliname or firmname, and the correct entries in the linking table to show more than one firm linked to a single client where correct.
If one cliname is linked to two firmnames, I would expect two records for that cliname to show in the set; at least that is what I want.

The linking fields are numeric, which is wrong I believe, but is now maybe going to cause a lot of problems to change to character.

I think that I am missing something simple, but am baffled.

    Brian.

Brian, this is normal when you have a one to many link in your set design. Alpha Five displays one row for each discrete combination of records in the set. In the simplest case, assume a two table set where Father is the parent table and Children is the child table, linked one to many. If the current Father record has 3 Children, the default browse for the set would display three rows. Like this:
    Father Child1
    Father Child2
    Father Child3
There is only one record in the Father table, but 3 "composite" records in the set.

This used to be explained in the User's Guide Reports chapter, in a section called working with one to many sets. I don't know if it's still there or has been moved elsewhere in the documentation.

      Hi Tom,
Thanks for the info. I had a horrible thought that I was going to have to re-input all the tables from A4 all over again.
      Thanks again for your time.

      Brian.

Brian, it sometimes helps to think of the set as a single "composite table". Each row (displayed in the default browse) is a single composite record. If this is unfamiliar ground I recommend you play with a few throw away set designs, and watch how the composite records are created. Understanding this is fundamental to building Alpha Five applications.

By the way there is still a section in the User Guide chapter on Reports called "using one to many sets". It's required reading for anyone using sets. In fact it's worth reading several times. -- tom
