Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update a PICTURE field from the web v7?

    Is it possible to update a PICTURE field on a web form from a small web cam?

    #2
    How does your web cam make the picture available?

      As a jpeg.

      I guess I should say that we don't care what we use we just need it to work and we don't need high quality just a picture you can make out of a person.

      If you know of a WEB CAM that will work we will purchase it.

      Any suggestions are appricated.

      Thanks

        But how can this JPEG generated by the webcam be accessed? This will determine how you would get it into your web application.

          Lenny:

          It currently just saves it as a JPEG file on the local disk.
          In a perfect world if it could import it straight into the field would be great.

            You can. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and look at the Similar Threads for the specifics on how to do this.

              Forgive me in advance, but I'm new to this and I have reviewed and searched everything I can think of in the forums and google on picture fields.

              However, I don't find anything on updating a PICTURE FIELD via the WEB. Is there one I'm missing you can direct me to.

              Thanks

                If the JPEG is a file on the server's hard drive, then your import has nothing to do with the web, even if it is ultimately displayed in a web form. Just import it the same as you would with a desktop app

                  Lenny:

                  I'm sorry I must have not made it clear. The picture is NOT on the SERVER its on a remote machine that needs to be able to update the database from the WEB.

                  I'm trying to UPDATE a PICTURE via the WEB form not local.

                    Well then we go back to my original question, how is the image made available? We've established that is is a JPEG on some hard drive somewhere that is not your server. What type of access do you have to this hard drive?

                      Can we go back to my original question and add a little to it. I think I'm making this more complicated then necessary.

                      "Is it possible to update a PICTURE field on a WEB FORM from a small web cam?"

                      This would be a USER that has access to ONE record in the DATABASE ONLY VIA THE WEB.

                      The picture would be coming from THEIR COMPUTER (NOT OURS) and I'm assuming the original picture would be stored in a JPEG file on there local hard disk. It would be an image we do not have access to until they somehow update the picture field on the web form.

                      For Example:
                      Lets say I have a database on My A5 server that you logon to and look at a form with your user information.

                      If we allowed you, you could update your Address, Phone # etc via this WEB form. The PICTURE is simply another field in the same database.

                      I want you to be able to UPDATE your PICTURE (its a picture field in the database) on the same form as your name, address etc.

                      IE: I'm trying to allow a user to UPDATE a PICTURE FIELD via a WEB form NOT LOCAL.

                      Hope this may clear it up a little. Thanks again for your time.

                        You can use the V7 file upload capability to let the web user upload a file from their computer using a page such as the sample code below. This would get the file onto your server's hard drive. you could then use the techniques in the similar threads to place the newly uploaded image into a table.

                        Code:
                        <html>
                        <%a5
                        dim msg as c = ""
                        if eval_valid("cmd")
                            file.from_blob(ServerSetting.Document_Root + "\\" + FileToUpload.filename, FileToUpload.data)
                            msg = "<a href=\"/" + FileToUpload.filename + "\" target=\"_blank\">" + FileToUpload.filename + "</a> was uploaded<br /><br />"

                            'your code to place the newly uploaded file into a table would go here

                        end if
                        %>

                        <head>
                        <title>File Upload example</title>
                        </head>
                        <body bgcolor="#ffffff">
                        <%a5 ? msg %>
                        <form action="<%a5 ?request.script_name %>" method="POST" enctype="multipart/form-data">
                        <input type="file" name="FileToUpload" value=""><br />

                            Do a search for Uploading Files to the Web Application Server
                            It's in the help file

                            I want to do the same thing. The sample should copy the file to the server and then you would copy it to the database in the after_validate part of the grid.

                            The code snipet doesn't work at present and I'm not knowledgable enough to know how to fix it but it has been brought to Alpha's attention

                              Sorry didn't see Lenny's reply before I replied. This ones works better than the one from the help file. The only problem is that it takes the entire path from the source so you get the falling error

                              500 Internal Server Error

                              Script Error

                              The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
                              C:\A5Webroot\C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\My Pictures\Casey & Danyue\Dagny & Walter English2.jpg

                              Is there a simple way to specify just the file name or do we have to parse the filename before passing it to the function
