Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Automatic generation of Email

    Does anyone know if you can schedule automatic Emails with user intervention?

    By user I mean Webmaster. As I am building a family site I would like to send Birthday wishes, Holiday greetings etc.

    Is it possible?

    #2
    yes, this can be done easily with a little xbasic. you can use script_schedule() to run a script every day. this script could check a table that contains birthday info to see if anyone has a birthday on today's date. if so, it would send out an email message.

      According to what I read the script will play once, then has to be rescheduled. Can I include in the last line of the script the script_schedule instruction to reschedule it.

        Absolutely. That's the exact technique most people use.

            Okay I'm starting to get that straightened out. I know how to insert variables into a web page but I want to email an Ecard which will be in
            HTML. How do I insert a field from the DB into the HTML body of the Ecard.

              Also I'm having problems getting a block of text into a variable. It apparently has to be in one line.

              I can't figure out how to make HTML or plain text along with data fields fit into a text variable such as BODY to be used with automatic Emails.

              All the examples I can find are plain text and only one line long.

              I'll really be glad when the paper manuals arrive.

              PS this is really for V7

                Here are a couple snippets from an email generator in one of my apps that will probably get you going down the right track:

                Code:
                dim pm as P
                dim ps as P
                dim session.email_result as l

                msg_text = dtoc(date(),"4")+ "<br><br>Dear " + var->vFirstname + " " + var->vLastname + ",<br><br>"
                msg_text = msg_text + <<%txt%
                Thank you blah blah blah<br>
                <br>
                Your FedEx Tracking number is
                %txt%
                msg_text = msg_text + vShip_Track_Number
                msg_text = msg_text + <<%txt%
                .<br>
                <br>
                Prior to
                blah blah blah
                ...
                ...
                if (email_smtp_open(ps, "outgoing.myISP.net", 25, "myuserid", "mypassword")) then
                    pm.to = var->vEmail
                    pm.from = "[email protected]"
                    pm.from_alias = "Your real name here"
                    pm.subject = "Your Order has shipped."
                	pm.html_message = "<HTML>" + var->Msg_Text + "</HTML>"
                    session.email_result = email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
                end if
                email_smtp_close(ps)

                  Thank you Steve It was the <<%txt% %txt% That I needed to know. This will work nicely. Thanks again

                    Next Question. I got the Email and sent HTML however there are 4 images which refer to a subdirectory of the DB directory. The directory exists and the images are in the directory but they didn't go with the Email. Why??

                    or do I have to send them as attachments ?

                      best solution is to put the images on a server outside a firewall and then in your html email just specify the url for the images in the src tag.

                        Selwyn you are saying that if the folder with the images are uploaded to the host along with the rest it should work.

                        At the present they are pointed correctly using source but its a relative pointer instead of specific. ie src="_wp_generated/wp6006b751.png" . Making the pointer specific and it where they were as long as its not behing a firewall.

                        P.S. I moved the folder to my email webspace and used absolute pointers and it now works.
