Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    v6 suddenly VERY slow.

This is probably a computer issue rather than an Alpha issue but I thought I'd ask in case anyone has any ideas before I wipe the whole hard drive and start over.

When I run A5v6 or the A5v7 beta, half the time the program won't even start and the other half every keystroke or mouse click takes 4 seconds to "complete". In other words, if I type my name, I have to press the "C", wait 4 seconds, press the "a", wait 4 seconds, press the "l", wait 4 seconds - and so on. (Hmmm, this would be great if I could charge customers for the extra time!)

Every other program seems to be running with no problem - even A5v1, A5v4, and A5v5. I even ran MS Flight Sim because that requires so much memory, etc. - it runs fine.

Yesterday, I inadvertantly clicked something on a web page that tried to install a supposed antivirus program but I did not allow it to load and later Googled it to discover that it was, indeed, a bogus program.

So, I've run 3 spyware removal programs (8 items were removed) and 2 antivirus programs (2 new viruses were found and deleted) and they all give the computer a clean bill of health now.

I've also re-installed windows XP (over top of the existing program) and removed and re-installed A5v6 (at least 3 times) including the registry entries and re-run all the spyware and antivirus programs and the problem persists.

Anybody have any thoughts before I wipe the system drive and start over? (Dang, working with computers sure is fun!)

(While waiting for responses, I'll be verifying all my registration info and install files.)

Have you done a Ctrl+Alt+Del to check out what processes are running?

    That's where I usually start.

      Cal,

How much memory and how much space free on the win swap file drive (normally c:)?

Just as an aside, we moved up in part to Ver6, but we still
use Ver5 at the insistence of our people who type lots of stuff.
        into text fields.

The cursor in Ver6 is noticeably slower to move when inputting and
        correcting text.

This is the case in 6 different machines, with op systems from Win 98
        to latest XP.

          Two thoughts come to mind.

          1. Do you have V7 on the same machine?

          2. Is your V6 version beyond 1555-2051.

I have experienced all sorts of weird problems.

See Ronald A's post & my reply. V7 Board

            FWIW:

I did have v6 and v7 on the machine but they had been working together just fine. As I mentioned, I also had v1,4, and 5 and the system and they continued to work fine even though v6 and v7 had slowed to a crawl. All other programs seemed to be working correctly as well. (I did notice a brief hourglass once when not expecting it but maybe that was just because I was sensitized to the issue.)

After all the reboots, removing A5 (including registry entries), and re-installing Windows XP over top of the existing version, I finally bit the bullet - backed up everything and re-installed XP after formatting my "system" drive. I had to re-install a few programs and reset a few program settings but everything is working now. I should have done the full re-install sooner.

FYI: This is why my "system" drive is a separate drive and I avoid putting anything in Program Files like it was the plague! My "system" files are on my C: drive, "program files" are all on my D: drive, and "data" files are all on my E: drive. After reformatting my C: drive and re-installing XP, all my program files and data were untouched. Many of them work fine without re-installing them. I copied the Favorites and Start Menu items back to my own Documents and Settings folder and was basically back in business. Even Microsoft Flight Sim worked fine and had all the new aircraft I had downloaded; it only required resetting a couple of internal settings to get everything back to where it was.

              Same problem with V6

Many f my clients have insisted that I return their app to V5 because V6 is just to slow. Most complaints are on loading and moving between fields. I've all but stopped using V6 for app development and have gone back to V5. I'm on build 1600 2057 and the problem persist. I don't use V6 for any web based applications and thought that the new features would be a plus. For now I'm sticking with V5 until V6 performance can be improved. Getting tired of clients complaining about speed problems.

                Cal,

Glad you solved your problem. Did you think to simply rollback the system w. System Restore? That always worked for me in the past, when I had weirdism's crop up. And it's a lot less painful then doing everything that you did.

                  Fred,

Now that v.7 is out, I doubt you will see much, if anything, done to v.6.

Fred, my issue certainly had nothing to do with the issues you are describing. However, I have seen a bit of what you are describing and v7 seems to be much better. (I've noticed that new v6 clients don't complain but those who switch from v5 to v6 often notice the difference.)

                      This really is a problem

I wish Alpha would just get the bugs out of a product before they just move on to another version. Instead of fixing the problems wih V6 they just move on to V7 and leave users hanging. After my experiance with V6 IU doubt if I'm interested in upgrading again to V7 for more of the same. Its getting to expensive to just keep upgrading and upgrading. V5 is fine with me and I guess I'll just keep developing with it since I'm building normal database programs anyway, not web based.
