Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Enter must begin first" error

    Hello I am currently making a program in which the user to is create a price for a customer going through some steps. On the main title form, the user can click one of 6 buttons. When the "Create New Quote" button is clicked, it opens up a form. However as soon as this form is opened, the error "enter must begin first" appears, followed by "Data entry already in progress" error. These errors only occur when the button is pressed, if you go into the form through the control panel, everything is fine. I used the action scripting to open the form at a new record. It looks like this:
    'Open a Form or Browse layout, displaying all, or selected records in the layout.

    Code:
    DIM Shared varP_LetterheadQuote as P
    DIM layout_name as c
    layout_name = "LetterheadQuote"
    DIM tempP as p
    'Get pointer to existing window. In case layout_name is qualified with a dictionary name, extract up to first @. In case formname has spaces, normalize it
    tempP=obj(":"+object_Name_normalize(word(layout_name,1,"@")))
    'Test if pointer is valid
    if is_object(tempP) then
    	'Test if pointer refers to a form or browse
    	if tempP.class() = "form" .or. tempP.class() = "browse" then
    		'If so, then activate the already open window
    		tempP.activate()
    		tempP.new_record()
    	else
    		'Window is not already open, so open it
    		varP_LetterheadQuote = :Form.view(layout_name)
    		varP_LetterheadQuote.new_record()

    	end if
    else
    	varP_LetterheadQuote = :Form.view(layout_name)
    	varP_LetterheadQuote.new_record()

    end if
    I do not know why it does this. Someone please help.

    Brandon. Thank you.

    correction...

    It doesn't give the error when the form is loaded rather when new record is clicked. And it only happens most of the time, other times it is fine. I dont understand. Here is the program.

      enter must begin first

      Brandon:

      I have a program that just started doing that too. I have a tabbed form on the screen and can move between tabs, but to move to a new record or even an existing record I get the same error.

      I'm stuck too.

        Hello Brandon,

        'Test if pointer refers to a form or browse
        if tempP.class() = "form" .or. tempP.class() = "browse" then
        'If so, then activate the already open window
        tempP.activate()
        tempP.new_record()
        These messages occur because you are beginning an operation on a existing object before the previous operation is completed. IOW, you are probably trying to start a new record on a form that is already in enter or change mode. My guess is the above code is doing this as it is checking for an existing instance of the form, and if it exists it is putting it into new record mode. What I'd try is putting a tempP.commit() between the tempP.activate() and tempP.new_record() methods and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

        Good luck,
        Jim

          Re: "Enter must begin first" error

          Can somebody explain the above in details because I'm getting the same error message when creating a new record.

          I have a simple form that I use to manage my contacts. On that form, there is a "new contact" button. My problem is every time I create a new record and decide to discard/cancel the new record, I get "Enter must begin first". Sorry, I'm new to this... How do I stop this?

          --- FYI ---

          - I'm using Alpha Five 7
          - I have codes in the OnSaveRecord event that questions me on whether I want to save the changes or not.

          your response is greatly appreciated
          thank you in advance

            Try putting this in the CanSaveRecord event.

              Sorry, I gave you the wrong info.

              The codes are in "CanSaveRecord" event.

              any idea?

                Re: "Enter must begin first" error

                Playaz,

                What specific thing do you want explained? Since your question arrived at the bottom of an existing thread it's not clear what "explain the above in details" means???

                You will get specific help faster if you attach a copy of your database here with instructions for us to follow in order to trigger the error when we run it.

                  Re: "Enter must begin first" error

                  I was talking about the codes in the first post:

                  DIM Shared varP_LetterheadQuote as P
                  DIM layout_name as c
                  layout_name = "LetterheadQuote"
                  DIM tempP as p
                  'Get pointer to existing window. In case layout_name is qualified with a dictionary name, extract up to first @. In case formname has spaces, normalize it
                  tempP=obj(":"+object_Name_normalize(word(layout_name,1,"@")))
                  'Test if pointer is valid
                  if is_object(tempP) then
                  'Test if pointer refers to a form or browse
                  if tempP.class() = "form" .or. tempP.class() = "browse" then
                  'If so, then activate the already open window
                  tempP.activate()
                  tempP.new_record()
                  else
                  'Window is not already open, so open it
                  varP_LetterheadQuote = :Form.view(layout_name)
                  varP_LetterheadQuote.new_record()

                  end if
                  else
                  varP_LetterheadQuote = :Form.view(layout_name)
                  varP_LetterheadQuote.new_record()

                  end if
                  I'll try to send you a copy of my database tonight
