Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Please let me know at your earliest. thx

      Missing Installation Maker

      Hey Guys (and Gals),

I didn't even know I had this problem until I read about it in this thread. Aaron, thanks for the fix. Don't know about anyone else, but my copy of V7 is fixed.

      Thanks

          Alpha's Support

          Tony,

As you get more Alpha time under your belt, you'll find that the support you are talkinbg about is the norm for Alpha and one of the company's strong points. To say it plain and simple, I don't know of a single software company that provides the quality of support that we get from Selwyn and Co.

            Thanks

Thanks Aaron and Lenny, the fix worked. I am assuming there is a permanent fix. This doesn't mess me up when I am trying to create v5 instlallation packages does it? The fix seems to be working jusf fine. Please let us when you have the permanent fix and also, if we should be aware of anything issues this temporary fix might create.

            Thanks again.

The release notes for 3004 identify this as a bug.
I've installed runtime and full version patches Build 3880-3005. I still don't have the installmaker. Is the copying files from v6 or downloading additional files from the release notes page (installmaker.exe) the permanent fix?

Not a problem for me, it just seems someone forgot this and it might confuse a new user.

The files are not (and will not be) part of the patch to avoid bloating the patch. The fix is outlined in the Release Notes, and requires either copying the files from A5v6 or downloading the latest trial edition and reinstalling.

I purchased the 3 user runtime at the same time as I got A5V7.
This was my first time with the runtime.
There's nothing referring to the runtime in my version of A5V7 Build 3880/3005 of the tools menu item.
When I refer to page 5 of the PDF docs, it mentions the setup.exe.
                  Where do I find this?
I've just finished reading the whole 9 pages of the runtime docs and I still don't have a clue how to distribute this application.
Appreciate any help to get me going.

What's the problem with RUNTIME ??

OK, I have just purchased the 3-user runtime for A5v7 and have exactly the same problem as described here in this post.

I have the latest version of A5v7 installed: 3880-3005. I have also just purchased, downloaded and installed Runtime for version 7 from the download site my purchase confirmation advisory.

In addition I have copied the 19 files referred to above by Aaron from my A5v6 program directory (I don't have the v 6 runtime) to the A5v7 program directory. I got cautionary messages when I did this saying that most of these files already existed (sorry, I didn't count exactly how many). But I did NOT replace the files in the A5v7 directory that had more recent dates, which seemed to be most all of them.

When I try to run installation maker (Tools menu/ Utilities option/ create install package). I get the same error message - see attached JPEG:

-> "You must install and execute the run-time edition of Alpha Five before continuing."

WELL, I DID THIS AND I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!

OK, how do I fix this please.

As the instructions indicate, you need to *run* the Alpha Five Version 7 Runtime once.

I've already done that and it didn't add the runtime item to my tool menu.

Kevin Timberlake emailed me privately and gave me the instructions on setting up a runtime application.
I've set on up, tested it and it worked.

The documentation is less than helpful in this instance but with other developers help, I was able to get going.

                        Thanks for your response.

It doesn't add "runtime" to the tool menu, it adds it to the Windows start menu. You have to run the Alpha Five Runtime once after you install it before you can use the InstallMaker, just as the error message states.

Thanks, Aaron. I did as you suggested and ran the A5v7 runtime from the Windows start menu and everything now works.

Obviously this problem is inconveniencing a lot of people who are falling into the same trap, and its not too hard to work out why. The error message is misleading. For example, I couldn't run the runtime because the option to do so was not on the A5v7 Tools/Utilities menu option - this is the only place I have ever run it from in the past.

How about these suggestions. Make the error message clearer, and have it refer to the Windows start menu. Or better still, have the Runtime installer execute the runtime when it finishes. Simple, problem fixed. No more silly questions. :)

To the best of my knowledge, the runtime has never been accessible from the tools menu.

It's the option labelled "create install package" on the Alpha Five Tools/ Utilities menu option.
