Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't create pdf reports from preview screen.

What can I do to correct this problem. I still have version 6 installed as my back up until i get every thing running with v7. I can still create pdf reports with v6 with the same data but v7 seem to have some problem with creating the same pdf reports.

Please give us specific details about how you are trying to create the PDFs and what happens when you do so.

Usually I open a report form that I created from the reports tab. The report preview screen opens. Then I press the 'Save in Acrobat .PDF format" button as I always did in version 6. Acrobat reader opens but the pages are blank.

I am seeing the same behavior. I left all of the defaults in PDF and get blank pages. I can save in rtf format but it doesn't have the lines that help make things easier to read.
If you wish, I can send you a copy of the file.

        Thanks

I just tried sending a pdf report via e-mail and it also is blank. By the way, I'm using adobe version 7. I don't know if that makes any difference.

I haven't tested it in v.7, but in v.5 if you open a report in modal view, you cannot ceate a PDF. In normal modeless view, it works. It would seem to be a bug.

How do you open a report in modeless view? I can do forms but I don't see anything about reports.

Modeless is the default. For modal, just select the option in the report genie. In xbaisc, the report parameter requires a .t. as the last parameter (but for preview mode only).

I just don't see anything in the report genie that indicates modal or modeless. I did create a new report and it works fine. I starting going through the reports and previewing them and trying to view them as pdf's. Some work fine and others do not. (see the attachment above)I'm not seeing a common link among the ones don't print correctly. Thre are no passwords or other security settings, no encryption (that I know of). Maybe I'm dense.

I see. I was working from the control panel. The question now is why do some reports print correctly and some do not? And why the difference between version 6 and 7?

It looks to be a bug. I just tried printing the offending report from a button and have it set to modeless as indicated and it still prints pdf.

Jim, I see the same problem using one of the AlphaSports report layouts.

                            Here's the sequence I'm following:

                            Start A5V7, Build 3872 | 3002
                            Open AlphaSports database
                            Click Reports
                            Click Customer Reports
                            Choose All Customers

[ at this point the preview appears ]

                            click File Menu
                            Choose Save As
                            Choose Adobe Acrobat PDF
Accept the default filename & path
Check the box to open report in Acrobat.
                            Click OK

[ At this point the preview closes, but the report is NOT saved to disk. A search of the entire hard disk reveals that the file is nowhere to be found. ]

Have you reported this to Alpha software using the Send Bug Report function?

Yes. I sent it this afternoon along with a copy of the application. I have two reports. One works fine the other one does not. The one that does not work does save a file in the applicaton folder.
The difference in the way we worked was, I was working in the control panel and used the acrobat icon at the top of screen.

                              Jim

P.S. This edit feature is nice!!
