Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Errors During load

i Just installed v7 WAS and I receive the following error on startup

I have exactly the same error message. It also has a "Error running addin startup_mapi. Cannot find external function." A5V7WAS does not load after clicking the OK button.

OS - Microsoft Small Business Server running Exchange. I have full admin rights.

As a work-around, you can download, install, and run at least once, the v7 trial version. This will register the controls that are being complained about.

If you are getting the mapi startup error, the Web App Server cannot load the MAPI functionality from Windows. If you search in the V6 board, you'll find several solutions, the most common of which is to get the missing mapi32.dll from another computer. Alternatively, you can cerate a file "nomapi" in your Web App Server program folder and then the MAPI loading will be bypassed at startup.

          Lenny:

The server already has mapi32.dll in the system32 folder. I need mapi to work, so can't use the nomapi option. The file in place is dated: 8/25/05 and is 622KB.

Contrary to my own statement above, the WAS does start up after clicking the OK on the error message - I did not notice it is now running as a service.

Below are the contents of the MAPI startup script. Please run it line by line in the interactive window and let me know what error you get at what point...

            Code:
            declarestruct MapiRecipdesc L1Reserved,L1RecipClass,&C1Name,&C1Address,L1size,L1internal
            declarestruct MapiFiledesc L1Reserved,L1flFlags,L1Position,&C1PathName,&C1FileName,L1filetype
            declarestruct MapiMessage L1Reserved,&C1Subject,&C1NoteText,&C1MessageType,&C1DateReceived,&C1ConversionID,L1Flags,&MapiRecipdesc1Originator,L1RecipCount,&MapiRecipdesc1Recip,L1FileCount,&MapiFiledesc1File
            declare mapi32 MAPISendDocuments LLCCCL
            declare MAPI32 MAPISendMail LLL(MapiMessage)LL

I tested twice, once with the mapi32.dll that existed on my server, once with a mapi32.dll copied from my desktop computer. See important notes in bold regarding email functions. Here are the results for v7:

mapi32.dll that was on my server:
              - gives the startup_mapi error
              - the last two declare statements respond with "Error, couldn't find external function"
              - the other declare statements do not report any error
              - email functions DO NOT work

              mapi32.dll copied from my desktop
              - no installation problems
              - no errors running the declare statements
              - email functions DO NOT work

note: with A5V6, email functions work with EITHER mapi32.dll active.

I properly closed and opened Alpha WAS between each trial. Ran the Interactive tests in a trial version of v7.

Did you register mapi32 with regsvr32?

go to a DOS prompt and run the command

                    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mapi32.dll

                      Lenny;

                      Server replies with:
                      ---------
c:\windows\system32\mapi32.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found

This file can not be registered.

                        Aaron:

See msg above addressed to Lenny in error. Plus, I can't see how running regsvr32 would make a difference. The email functions work fine with v6, but not with v7; plus v7 gives the startup_mapi error. If its working on other systems, it must be a difference with the Win Small Business server.

Again, on my installation, MAPI works with v6, but not with v7.

                          Lenny;

I already tried that on your suggestion elsewhere. D/L the trial v7 to the server and installed.

Doesn't what I say make sense? On my server, Mapi works with v6 so the mapi32.dll must be functioning properly. But v7 produces and error, and email does not work. Doesn't that mean its an issue with how v7 is functioning, not any lack of settings on my server?

My answer regarding installing the trial was in regard to the original problem that started this thread, a startup error in Startup_100_Register_Control, and had nothing to do with your MAPI problem.

Aaron is more familiar with the MAPI implementation, which is why he has joined in to help with your problem.
