Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Clean up an A5 Web Form

I'm trying to duplicate a form that another peson created for a web site. I'm trying to use A5.

The way it looks is very important to the client and I'm new to the A5 stuff.

Could someone view the attach screen shot of a small WEB form thats attached and offer suggestions on how I can duplicate it without a lot of extra coding in A5v7 WEB.

The current A5 component I created has everything in a column down the page and it doesn't look as nice.

    Thanks

this can be quite easily done.
the trick is using 'free form layout'.
for example, you will see that firstname and lastname are in the same row.

you do this by setting the 'hidden' property for the lastname column to true.
then setting firstname to freeform layout. then when you edit the freeform layout for 'firstname', you add the control for lastname.

What a LIFE saver. That was so easy. THANK YOU. THANK YOU :)

Since that was so easy. Is it possilbe to divide the stuff into different sections on the screen without a lot of coding?

      Code:
      [FONT="Fixedsys"]For Example:
      Bill To: Ship To:
      Mr. John Doe Cindy Smith

New York, NY 12345 Boston, MA 98765

      Detail here
      xx/xx product description amount
      xx/xx product description amount[/FONT]

If you're looking for a nicely formatted invoice, you may want to consider using a PDF report. Take a look at the Print Invoice link on Example 3.1 in the Web Applications Demo sample app.

Lenny's right about the formatting for a report. If you want to format it like you show for the web page, you'll find that it's easiest to create a table in your freeform builder first, then fill the cells as needed.

It does not sound like the PDF printer got properly installed when you installed Alpha Five.

Look in the Printers folder (click Start/Printers). Do you see "Alpha Five Printer"? If not try reinstalling AlphaFive. Saving reports to PDF will not work if you don't have the Alpha Five Printer listed. It should be installed automatically when Alpha Five is installed.

I just tried Lennys link to the demo and got the same error as Ron when I clicked to print the invoice. The Alpha Five Printer is on my list of printers.

                        Selwyn, Lenny, Steve,
You never cease to amaze me...this works like a charm and solves several issues that I have...I can forget trying to get the curser to go from the last field in one Tab Pane to the next, and I can forget trying to create two or more columns on a grid.

I was afraid of trying the Free Form Layout, but no more! (Some of us just need a little extra prodding to try what they think may be code.) Now, without coding, I know how to use Free Form Layout and a table and create the look that I want :) Thank you, thank you, thank you :)))

                        Happy Camper in flooding California,
                        Wanda

Column widths - how do I set them?

Okay, I'm using a table with 4 columns in my free form layout. I can get the columns to change sizes in the HTML editor but it doesn't make a difference when I click on Live Preview.

How can I set the column widths in free form layout?

                          Thank you,

Oh I see what the problem is. I was trying to view the demo on my home computer, but my version of A5, v7 is installed on my work computer, therefore the A5 PDF print driver did not exist on home computer. When I viewed it on my work computer it came out very clean and nice.

This However this brings up a second question:

How could a customer who is viewing this Invoice from the internet print it without having the actual A5 software installed on his machine?

(Is there a way to provide just the print drivers to a customer for that very purpose, without them having to buy a A5 license?)
