Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Builder Filter with Session Var

    Ok, I've spent hours reading everything and search but can't find an answer that works.

    How do I use the FILTER on the grid builder with a session var.

    For Example:
    Client=session.clientID

    Thanks

    ps: I have read where you can't use a session var in a filter in places but I can't get it to work on the other page that shows the comp please point or provide a working solution if possible.

    On the a5w page you will find a section with the following code

    Code:

    'Following code allows you to override settings in the saved component, and specify the component alias (componentName property).
    'Tip: Keep the componentName property short because this name is used in page URLs, and it will help keep the URLs short.
    'Each component on a page must have a unique alias (componentName property).
    with tmpl_general_search
     componentName = "general_search"
    end with
    In this case general search is my component. Inset the following line after componentName

    Code:
     DBF.filter = "Client = " +quote(session.clientID)
    If you are using a grid link component you will find in the area where you define the link, an edit button which will take you to the over ride window where you would insert the above filter.

      Thank you but I still can't get it to work.

      Just to make sure I'm going to the page without anything on the URL other than the a5w page name. Is this section for passing var on the URL. I'm trying to do this without using the URL for security reasons.

      Any other suggestions?

        I Think I understand what you are doing. I'm going to the new page based on a linking field so the URL contains both the id and sets the session variable. I'm not sure about your security concerns. Every one of my pages requires that you be a logged in user so all that is seen is an error 500 or the login page. They might notice the URL but all they'll see is the id # and if they're legit then they must have selected it on the previous page.

          Lets say I have a login and when the user log's in we assign a session variable called session.userid and session.clientID. I've confirm these are set by looking at the a5w_info().

          Now on one of the pages that has nothing but general information on it I have a link to the EditClient.a5w page that has a component by the same name.

          When I link to this page WITHOUT any URL variables I want it to display ONLY the client information for this user (ie: via the session.clientID).

          Can you give any suggestions. Thanks again for your assistance, this is driving me crazy. It appears so simple but for the life of me it doesn't work.

            First of all tell me what components are on the a5w page you are going to. I have a couple of pages that I navigate to with the new menu system and they all come up with the specific info.

              The A5W page list the Grid Compnent - Echo, Update Errors, Search, Data and Detail.

              Maybe a stupid question, Doesn't EVER Component show these on A5W pages, are they changable??

                I GOT IT... THANK YOU..

                The problem was in the I CHANGED THE "SESSION COOKIE NAME" in the WEB APPLICATION SERVER Setup to something other than "A5W_Sess_ID" and it doesn't work.

                However, if I <%a5 ? session.ClientID %> it shows fine but it does not work in a filter.

                Thanks AGAIN for your input, I would have never found it without it.

                  Each of these is part of the component. Because the components can be used on a number of pages you have to modify the code of the specific page to define the specific requirement. ie filter and index.

                  Go back to my post of 12:52. Look for a bit of code on the page that resembles the code in the message. This is where they define the alias for the component. Insert the following DBF Fiilter assuming that Client is your Key field and your session variable is session.client_ID

                  This should work although I haven't tried it. All of my pages use linked grids which requires the filter to be inserted when you set up the links on the grid linker definition.
