Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can someone confirm that this is not working correctly?

Attached is a POSTTEST db. it has 2 tables each with 4 fields

    from_post-tbl

    link c 5
    link_no 5 0
    from_post n 5 0
    from_post2 n 5 0

    to_post-tbl

    link c 5
    link_no n 5 0
    to_post n 5 0
    to_post2 n 5 0

To post contains 1 record with
    link=ABC
    link_no=1

From_post contains a coulple of records

None of the field rule posts are occuring (from_post table had posting rules)
    2 forms from and to

can you see if posts work on your machine?
can you tell me if you open one of the forms if your top menu bar doubles/repeats itself
If you see a mistake I am making would you please be kind enough to let me know?

I'm new but not ignorant and think these posts should work

    Getting extreamly Frustrated

    Jeffrey,

Using the default browse (instead of your form) the two post field rules work fine once I corrected a typo in your source linking field expression and your target linking field expression for the second field (from_post2). Your expression included an unnecessary crlf() pair at the end of the simple link expressions you defined. I removed the crlf pair by putting cursor on second line in the expression builder and backspacing. Your expression should NOT cover two lines, unless you're word wrapping a longer string.

Have not yet had a chance to look at your forms.

      Jeffrey,

Your forms look fine here. I'm not getting a doubled menu bar.

      I'm using XP Pro (sp2).

Using the FROM form, if I enter a new record the two fields get posted correctly. From_post1 field value is added to the corresponding field in the TO table. From_post2 field value replaces the corresponding field in the TO table.

What operating system are you using?

Have you considered the possibility you may have experienced corruption during download of A5V7? You might want to download it again.

        Corrections

        Jeffrey,

pls disregard the first post from me in this thread. I thought you were using A5v7.

When I open your database with A5v6 and study your situation a bit closer I see the post problem and have fixed it in the attached example. Unzip the attachment to an empty folder then study the target and source linking field expressions closely. It's a mistake to define them the way you did. When you want the from_post field to be posted when the current Link field value matches a link field value in a record in the target table, your field rule definition should NOT tie the field value to any particular field value.

        Here you used

Link = "ABC" as both source and target link field expression.

        Should have simply used

        Link

        See the difference ?

OK now i'm really starting to think something major is going on.
I can see where you have sucessessfully added 2 records and posts worked. I added 2 more records and they did not post. I had previously tried using just "link" and that did not work so tried the formulas to evaaluate to true. You can now see where i have added 2 new records to the from table and they are not reflected in the to table. How well does alpha support uninstall and reinstall? will i be able to get a reg key? I really think the doubled menu has something to do with it. using xp home 2ed.

Thanks a lot tom for looking. do you agree its time to dump this and try again?

          Jeff

Tom Looking at yours again. When I reopened it the fields were posted. I added 2 more records and they did not seem to post. but then I found out if I close the "to" form and reopen it the post have occured.

            from alpha help:
Note: When you use a posting Field Rule, the posting occurs during data entry each time you enter a new record or change a record. Target field values are always up-to-date. Contrast this with using the Post Operation, in which a batch processing operation is performed. All matching values for multiple records are posted when the operation is run.

"Target field values are always up to date"

I thought that with this statement that I would see posting occur in real time or 30 sec or 60 sec or what ever. I did not expect to have to close and open the form to get the posting to show.

I'm not sure if this solves my problems going to go back and try a few things

              Jeffrey,

when I unzip your file I get several errors which seem to be related to a series of sub folders you are including in the zip file. You might want to examine the folder names you've chosen to see if they are legal, otherwise PkZip is telling me they're corrupt.

If I extract the database without the damaged subfolders your database opens fine and it appears that the posts were completed just fine. Attached is an image showing what I see when I look at the last record you entered in the From_Post table, and the only record in the To_Post table. I've edited none of the data.

What build of vers 6 are you running? It should be 1600 / 2057.
