Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to Create browse designed by me

I want to create a browse designed by me. B'coz the browse view provided by default is not looking good according to layout i am using in the form. So, how can i design my own browse and invoke it in my form. Would i need to write any specific XBasic code? Please guide me on this.
    Thanks in advance

Take a look at Using the Browse Editor. After you create a new browse, you can embed it into your form. See Placing an Embedded Browse.

      browse

Actually its the Coumn names colour and its background which i need to change. From the link that u sent i think this following code would work.

      "browsename.fieldname.border.style as C"

As i am a new user of this software(Alpha 5 version 7) and i have to complete a project in it and submission time is very near. I want to know where would i put the above code b'coz i wasn't able to change the browse's border and its background directly from its properties.
      Thanks for response.

        Button Events

I am using a button to put the values from fields on the form to a table. I am using its onpush() event and invoke "Enter new Record" Action script on it. I want to make sure that some fields don't go empty in database. Just like we have "Required Filed Validator" in visual studio.net.
So what's the alternative. If anyone replies to this post and sends some code, please also write where to put that code and how.
        Thanks.

          Hi Salah,

Right click the column header in the browse. Column properties should pop up. Go to tab "Other". You could put your color equation there.

          Regards

          Ed

I am not using an embedded browse. The browse is created from a set and then embedded in form. SO the solution given by you is not working.
            Thanks for replying.

So it sounds like you ARE using an embedded browse. You can change the color of a column by right clicking on the browse (embedded or not) while in edit mode. You don't need a color equation unless you are going to change the color dynamically based upon certain conditions. Just change the font color or background color to whatever you want.

For your required field validator ,Alpha Five has a more extensive concept of "field rules" than visual studio. You can set these rules at the table/set level and they will apply to all forms, browses, etc. To do this go to the Table tabl of control panel, right click on the table and select Edit Field Rules. The data Entry section is where you set a required rule. More complex requirements can be set on Validations tab.

If you are putting a browse on a form, the 2 options are an embedded browse, and a named browse (a separate browse created outside the form). For either, you should be able to color the browse and border without code, unless you want the colors to change dynamically. Which type of browse do you have on the form?

                Bill.

Its the named browse and now i have been able to change its layout from its properties.
Is there a way to change the buttons in browse used for navigating record vertically and horizontally when it is embedded in form.?
                  And about the field rules...
When i apply them and set that some fields must be filled before the submit buuton is pressed, an error dialog comes at the form "This filed must be filled".(Some thing like that)when i click on that field.

I think yuou would find it very helpful to look at the AlphaSports sample database that ships with v7. It does many of the things you have questions about, so it can show you a working example.

As Tom mentioned to you in another thread, it would make it easier for us to understand your problem if you post a small sample database and tell us how to recreate the problem. But look at AlphaSports first...
