Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4V7/WinXP Speed Issue

I've been using Alpha Four since version 3 when we were running DOS.

We are currently running A4V7 with WindowsXP Pro workstations and Windows 2003 servers. Initially, everything worked fine. A few months ago, we started experience long delays when we try to start Alpha Four. Now, we're still experiencing the long delays and in addition, it takes FOREVER to switch between different databases. I have seen numerous posts here about this but I have yet to see an answer... Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it ?

    Thanks.

    Angus,

Are you noticing that the floppy drive on your PC is being access when trying to load A4 and switching between different tables/databases?

    Mike
    Thank you,

No, the pc I use doesn't have a floppy drive.

We have the program installed on our PCs, and the data stored on our server.

Program on the PC and data on a server is the same situation for me. My PC w/XP has a floppy and when doing things in A4V8, something is attempting to access the floppy very often, causing EXTREME delays - typically when loading a database or form, or accessing data. I disabled the floppy and still got the same delays.

I decided to browse the files in the A4 directory found a file that had some mention about a "floppy" listed within the file, leading me to think that this file or part of A4 is looking to the floppy for something, which is causing these EXTREME delays. I would guess that if you don't have a floppy and it still looks for it, that you'll experience the delays also. Maybe I'm on to something...maybe not. I've contact somebody at Alpha and have sent them the information, but have not heard back from anybody yet.

The file name in question is: eomsetup.inf

        The following is the files contents. See the references to "floppy" down at the end;

I loaded A4V8 on an even faster PC; a Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop w/P4, 2.20 Ghz, 256MB Ram. While there is no floppy on this laptop, there is still a long lagging, hesitation, or delay when trying to read or switch between tables. Speed is still noticeably quicker using A4V6 on an 8 year old Celeron PC running Win98SE.

          Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions???

          Thanks,
          Mike
