Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Embedded Browse - Column Color Problem

It seems that the when I try to set an embedded browse border fill to Translucent it does not work. It will only show the color at 100% intensity without letting you reduce it. The sample will show the desired affect but it does not show in the browse itself. Has anyone experienced this or could I be missing something?

It seems that this is either a bug that has carried through numerous versions or the intent was to only allow solid colors. I would like to ask Alpha to clarify.

To me, this feature is very important as it allows many variations of the color schemes available. You can also use this to enhance the visual appeal of the browse feature in your applications.

There is something odd about the browses, I agree.

You can change the column colors etc if you use a saved browse, but it doesnt allow you to remove the splitter. The restriction tick boxes are there but when you go to view mode, it seems to ignore them.

If you use an embedded browse, the splitter can be got rid of, but the text background color can not be changed. I dont particularly want all my browses on a white background. Im talking here about the color behind the actual text items.

I've attached a screen shot of an intuit application. I like to look at other designs to get inspiration for applications and intuit has some of the best (I believe). This attachment shows where the ability to use the Translucent style would be a great benefit. The attached form uses a solid color in the browse header and a translucent version of that color in the column. It makes for a nice affect.

          Yep, I couldn't agree more !

I've just been testing again, and it seems that NONE of the tick boxes in the 'Restrictions' column are remembered if you use a saved browse rather than embedded.

It allows you to tick/untick them, and you can then save, but once you go into view mode and back to edit mode, all of your choices are forgotten.

Trying to edit the details on the saved browse itself doesn't work either, because you don't get the full range of options that you do on the embedded one.

Maybe Alpha need to look at the functionality of the Browse in its entirety, perhaps for an update.

Wanted to bring this back to the top and see if someone from Alpha could respond.

              Hey jwolfe,

Where exactly are you changing the values for this border fill you mention ?

If I add an embedded browse, then go to properties, and click on the border tab, I only get Border Style and Border Shadow.

I can only see an option for Border Fill if I use a listbox or combobox....

I also solved one problem i had with the restrictions column too.

If you have a saved browse and you then add a browse to a form, telling it to use the saved one, there are 2 places where you can change the restrictions and browse appearance. One on the browse you actually add to the form, and the other when you go to the saved browse and edit its properties from the menu.

It seems one set overides the other.

You can set the properties of individual columns by left clicking the column and highlighting the whole column. Then right click on it and you will see the Properties option. Here you can set options for each of the columns individually.

Yeah I was referring to the problem I had with the browse splitter in my earlier post. Sorry if Im hijacking your thread.

If you add a browse on the main form, using the toolbox, and set is as a named browse layout rather than embedded, you then specify the browse that you have already saved. If you now click on the Browse tab of its properties, there are 2 columns - 'Browse Appearance' & 'Restrictions'. Note how many options are in each column.

Now, go to the saved browse itself in the control panel, go into Edit mode, and select Browse Properties from the Browse menu at the top of the screen. Again, go to the 'Browse' tab. You get the same 2 columns called 'Browse Appearance' & 'Restrictions'. Compare the options in each column here, with the options you looked at when you edited the browse in the form itself, and you will see that some of the options are the same, while some are missing altogether.

On to your original problem; I cant see the option for Fill Style on the Border tab when using a browse. Only for a list box or combo box.....

I believe we're talking about 2 different settings here. You're looking at the "Browse Properties" and I'm looking at individual column settings for that Browse. Here's a screen capture...

Ah yep. I see what you mean now. You're right it doesn't work as it should.

The only way I was able to change the colors like that was to use the conditional color equation of the 'Other' tab, and pick a range of light and dark shades of the same color, depending on the condition.

Also, by setting the very bottom one, which is default if none of the conditions are met, its a roundabout way of doing it I suppose.

I know this method doesn't allow you to set the translucency, but you can kinda achieve a similar effect by choosing the pale colors instead.
