Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Reports - Setting a default layout for report

I am finding it impossible to set a default layout for a report.

    Print setup is PDF Driver.
In design mode the layout is set to the size of A4 landscape.

I have tried the following with no success.

1.In design mode go to File/Print setup change orientation from portrait to landscape. Click the properties button and in the configuration tab changed properties from Portrait to landscape. Click OK. Click OK again. Save the current layout. Close the current layout. Open the current layout again in design mode to check if properties input have been saved as input. Do as before but layout still set at poprtrait.??????

    2. In design mode Select Report/Properties/Report Properties, select printer tab under report properties to see if option available to change orientation. Radio button has "Use Default Printer" specified - PDF Printer on LPT1 - all other options greyed out therefore cannot change.

The only way that I can get the report to print in landscape and not portrait is to preview the report(which always previews in portrait), go to File/Print Setup change orientation from Portrait to landscape, click OK, exit the preview, run the report again and it comes out in the correct format.

Not the type of instruction you want to give to a client.

Can anyone please tell me how you can in design mode get the report to HOLD the desired orientation.

    Thank You
    Robert

Robert, I'm not seeing the problem you describe here.

Using AlphaSports I used QuickReport to create a simple layout for the Customer table. Included a few fields in tabular (column) format. Saved the layout. At this point the default orientation for the page is portrait, and the page size was letter.

I then chose the Report menu, then Properties, then Report Properties, then the Page tab. Finally, I checked "Landscape" in the page layout section of the dialog, and saved the layout again.

when I preview the report it displays in landscape mode, though I have to scroll to the right to see it fully. When I print it it prints in landscape mode. When I save the preview image as PDF it creates a landscaped pdf file.

If I close Alpha Five and then open AlphaSports to run the report again it behaves correctly, the preview, the printout, the PDF are all landscaped.

Not sure how my sequence is different from yours but maybe this will give you some clues. -- tom

      Yes Tom,

That is my problem. I am doing exactly as you describe and everthing should stay as set - but it doesn't. This has always existed in my application even in version 6 but I just put up with it. But now as I wish to distribute the application I should get it working as intended. The simple one's are the most frustrating.

Just on the point in creating applications using runtime - Where do you find the install package created after using the installation maker. It should be obvious I know?????

      Thanks Tom

Robert, I notice one thing you do differently than me. In your first post in this thread you said

        Print setup is PDF Driver.
This is something I do NOT do. I design the report for a conventional printer, if you're trying to design the report for the PDF print driver, that may explain the differences you're seeing.

          Tom,

I chose this option as I presumed(mistakenly or not?) that this driver would be universal and when the application was distributed if the reports were in this format then it would be suitable for printing reports in pdf format for sending by e-mail and also work for hard copy printing.

Are you suggesting that I change the driver to my own local printer and if so how would this affect reports in Pdf and also the set up for reports when the application is sent to client with different computer set up?

Robert, the PDF driver is not a conventional printer driver. You should never try to print to it directly. PDF support in Alpha Five is obtained by File | Save As.

Perhaps others can offer suggestions to you on how to best provide PDF support to your end users. I have little experience doing so, but would assume you're going to either have to let them select the File | Save As option each time your app previews a report for them, or you're going to have to script it for them.

Your original question dealt with saving report layout properties. I think the answer will turn out to be what I have suggested. Define your layout for a local printer. In my work here I use the currently selected Windows default printer for my development machine, instead of hard coding each layout to a specific printer.

Thanks Tom, I'll do as you suggest.
