Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Halt Script = Halt A5v7?

I just tried turning on the "Halt Script" option and it created all kinds of problems.

The first time I restarted A5 after turning on the setting, A5 started correctly. The next time, the Halt Script box came up and it wouldn't go beyond that. Even if I clicked the Halt button, A5 wouldn't go beyond the gray screen. Subsequent restarts of A5 resulted in the same problem - no way to get past the gray screen. (I don't recall seeing the startup logo either and it is turned on.)

Rebooting the computer gave me one more good startup - sort of. It would start OK if I simply started A5. Trying to start an application from an icon (target = D:\A5v7\alpha5.exe -nosplash -title="AIMS Business" "E:\A5V5\AIMS\Busin5\aims.adb") would fail even on the first attempt.

On one "start A5 then start the app" attempt, I continued to try running the app and the initial menu form came up but it wouldn't run. However, I could use the View Settings menu.

I also had similar problems starting the runtime.

The only solution - without resetting the "Halt Script" option - was to reboot the computer in order to get A5 to start at all. It has now been rebooted 6 times and I'm tired of testing.

Now that I've turned off the Halt Script option (View Settings / Preferences / Running Scripts), everything is back to normal.

I had the same problem. I want to turn off the Halt Script option (View Settings / Preferences / Running Scripts) but A5v7 hangs when I try to re-start. I uninstalled and re-installed A5v7 and re-booted, but still I could not re-start A5v7. Then I re-installed A5v6 and set the Halt Script option to "No" in that program, then re-booted and tried to start A5v7 -- still no success.

Any ideas please on how I can get back into A5v7 so I can turn off the Halt Screen option? Any other way to turn off that option?

Did you try starting with the Ctl-Shift pressed? I don't know if it will work but it's worth a try.

Thanks, Cal. I tried your suggestion, but still no luck. Any other ideas?

I saw on another thread that re-installing XP is an option - but they didn't say if it was successful. What do you think?

I don't know anything about this bug. But you shouldn't have to reinstall XP. Try calling or emailing tech support. But I don't know if you can get hold of anyone between now and Monday.

I have no idea if re-installing XP will work or not. I certainly don't recommend wiping your hard drive and starting over except as a last resort. However, if simply re-installing over the existing OS, that shouldn't be a big deal.

Did you try going to the A5v7 folder and just clicking on Alpha5.exe to start the program all by itself with no application? That worked for me but only one time after each reboot of the system. As I noted above, if I tried to start an application from the same icon that started A5, it wouldn't work.

              delete the following registry key:
              HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 7\preferences\script_execution\allow_break

That will turn off the halt dialog.

Wasn't this the desired function to break out of a running function? :) And it doesn't work? :o

To be honest, I don't believe this ever worked right, all the way back to V5. I'm not even sure why we still have it in there as an option. I think we either need to remove it or fix it.

The "Halt Script" option is deadly!

                      Aaron,

There is a WISH that we can break out of a script when it hangs. If this is the solution than please fix it. If not than please change it in a way we can quit a hanging script. The problem will be that A5 is instable after the break. But you can give the pros and cons for such a function. I find it very useful in API programming. It hangs a lot :D when I program in API.....

                      Regards,

                      Marcel
