Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Publish using FTP, no error returned

    Code:
    Screen said: Uploading File "a5_application.a5i"
I was in a hotel and tryed to Publish via FTP. The Publishing via FTP screen just hung for a few minutes. And it returned to A5 like it finished the process without error. However, NOTHING was transferred.

I believe this maybe a PASSIVE FTP issue with the hotels firewall but there are a few A5 issues I having trouble with.

#1) Shouldn't Alpha5 return an error if there is a problem with FTP upload? And I also couldn't find any logs in A5 to check what is happening with FTP.

#2) I can't find a setting in A5 for Passive FTP. I did find a setting in the Project.settings file that I'm not sure is working yet about lPassive=.F. but changing it to .T. didn't do anything. Is there a way to use Passive FTP?

#3) How about secure FTP. Anyway to use it?

Other than the NO ERROR msg, these are NOT a critical issues. I'll just publish from the office. But if I had a problem with a production system that needed fixed it would be nice to support secure FTP and Passive mode.

    Can't upload to server

This Started today. I get the same result as the previous post however I'm using the same system that did work before.

Checking on the site showed a new folder called a5_application.a5i with 0 bytes and non of the components have been modified.

Can I use anothe ftp client to upload pages or components?

      Me as well.

I asked for help on this and got referred to the manual, instead of just getting an answer to the question.. My timing not so good, I just started yesterday with the ftp. I notice the style sheets etc. do upload, but that a5_application.a5i drove me nuts. I also can't get the alias working either.

9.In the text box below, enter the following:
      [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = c:\data\foldername
Where foldername is the name you were assigned for your
account. This can be found in your "Welcome to A5-Online!" email. can anyone help me here!

Peter my site is up and running and today I've done nothing different that what I did before so this is not a wrong setting or user problems unless I got gremlins.

I also don't recall seeing a5_application.a5i before while uploading unless it went by so fast the I didn't recognize it.

I am not sure what a5_application.a5i is used for but on my server I have to delete it otherwise my site will not work, it just hangs. As soon as I delete a5_application.a5i of the server, everything works fine. I just wish I could stop it from uploading in the firat place. Everytime I up load an update I have to remember to delet this file.

So far my site is still working. I'll delete the file from the site and see if that changes the uploads. Thanks

BTW I have the site on one monitor and Alpha on the other so I can see almost immediately what the result of a change was.

              Still a problem

This is the message - also if I cancel it hangs - before click I activate Windows task manager - progam running, click cancel, goes to not responding. It says some thing about ASCII mode just before all ends.

              Where it saves the file(s):

I've submitted this as a bug report. Both webroot on this PC and the host have that file and another that should not be there. The only difference is that publishing locally doesn't hang while the FTP hangs untill it times out ( 60 sec ) but nothing else seems to published.

I will review this in detail tomorrow. However I can tell you that a5_application.a5i is supposed to be there. What is the other file that you say should not be there?

Well Lenny like I said earlier, I have to delete this file off my server to get my app to run. I am running Windows server 2003 with IIS 6.0. I would like to know what this file is used for.

In my case the other file was a great long string of letters followed by a component name.a5wcmp. It might have be the result of an aborted edit but it was definitely not put there intentionaly.

Does the system generate a5_application.a5i when publishing or should it be in my default web project with the rest of the components?

Can you send me a copy of your a5_application.a5i file before deleting it please?

The file is used for application level variables. In most cases it will be empty and the empty file should be harmless.

                          It is generated during publishing.
