Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A search by month??

I hope I have a simple question... When doing a one time search or creating a macro run search..

    1. Looking for a search return of all clients of Birth date by MM (month)
    2. Table mode or expression mode?
    2. And how would it be done (step-by-step please).. assuming the database field is MM/DD/YYYY

One way is query by expression using "month(Date)=1"

assumes the date field is called "Date", and you want January.

I created a dialog script that prompts for a month and then runs a query. Hope it is helpful. The database name is CUSTBDAY. There are no December birthdays in the database so you can see how the onerror routine works. Play the BIRTHDAY script, select a month, the select the OK button.

        Still lost!

        Hello Gary & Steve,
Thanks. In advance for all your help. But Im still a little lost.

Gary I unzipped your files, placed them into a new Birthday folder running under Alpha4v7. I must be doing something wrong, cause I get no input prompt? The idea of an input prompt to select the month for the Query or Search/sort result is just what I want. Sorry Im so far behind on the learning curve with the Alpha database.

Steves above formula works and returns the desired customers with B-days of the same month. I wrote his expression within a Search/sort. The problem is I have to create a one-time search or write a search for each month. It would be better if I could get a prompt input when running a Script or Query like you suggested. My wife is the person who uses this database daily, and I have created the Application with menu for her ease of use.

Is there a way to create a prompt that would input the month numeric value in a script expression? Example: MONTH(DATE_OF_B)=03 .. The user prompted input would change the numeric 03 in the expression to whatever month.

Gary your dialog script or something similar is probably just what I need but I cant finger out how to modify it or use it. I have created a good solid Application using Macros. As you can see Im sorta lost on how to create a prompted input to for this kind of Query or Search. Actually in truth I understand the concept of the search much better than the Query.

Within my Application I could then create a Macro that would do all keystrokes from the Main menu prompting the month input for the Birthday.
        Thanks again,
        Lee

My example may have been over kill. I changed the BIRTHDAY script so it will work with any database that contains a field named DATE_OF_B. The script does not change the current index. It can be run from a Main Menu or from a form/browse using a buton or menu bar choice. When you play the BIRTHDAY script, it displays a dialog box with a Pick List of months. Select a month, select OK, the search will run and will return you to the Main Menu.

Birthday Script running, Problem solved !

Gary.... I downloaded your B-day script, I tried it within our Database App and it works fine...

Steve we probably should go to Alpha5..but I just don't have the time to do any re-learning at this point. The data base with slight mods from time to time seems to do the job... the ladies are familiar with it and don't want change anymore than I.
            Thanks again Gary & Steve
