Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    record counting -- not count last record

    The following is a listing of some of the calculated variables on a form named :
    fmtype_g_cusform, that is based on a table named : g_transactions.

    Code:
    item_num       = run_count(Tbl_Record_Id)
    show_count     = count(Tbl_Record_Id)
    new_show_count = :fmtype_g_cusform.Records_Get()
    The following is the formula for a page footer which gives me the number of records in the table,
    the number of records in the query and the sequence number of the record in the query that is displayed.

    Code:
    pg_rec_footer  = "Record Number "+alltrim(str(calc->Item_Num,5,0))+" of "
    +alltrim(str(calc->New_Show_Count))+" Records in the Searched Set. ("
    +alltrim(str(reccount("g_transactions")))+" Total Records in the Table.)"
    NOW.... I have used both 'show_count' and 'new_show_count' and both fail in the same way.

    If you are on the last record when the form is initiated, it will state 'record 200 of 200'. (In case you might
    wonder how that is accomplished, go to the last record, go to design mode and then save and return)
    If you are sequencing thru the records, all of the numbers are correct until you reach the last record.
    The display stays at the second last record number eg: '199 of 200'. If you jump from any record to the last
    record, the record number stays on the number of the previous record displayed.

    Is there any way to make the variable 'item_num' display the last record number correctly??

    RUN_COUNT(RECCOUNT()) will produce the required sequential number in a query list. Just for fun I used this in a calc field in a browse being filtered by a multistate button. I say just for fun because it is like watching paint dry whilst the sequ nos recaclulate for each query. In every instance the last two records had the same number. This was in A5v5 so may be a bug or just the way the cookie crumbles,

    COUNT(RECCOUNT()) IS ACCURATE FOR RECORDS IN A QUERY
    RECCOUNT() PRODUCES THE TOTAL RECORD IN THE TABLE

      D, I thought run_count() and count() were report writer functions ? I infer from the docs that while they may work correctly in some forms they may not in others. Alpha apparently doesn't support their use outside of report layouts.

        Yes, I am aware of that.... Just looking to find something that will do the trick without too much overhead and time.

          Run_Count....Embedded Browse Row Colors

          I tried to follow the directions in the online help on "How to Color Alternating Rows in a browse". The instructions say that you can place this on an embedded browse. So, I assume it should work in a form.

          The problem I am having is that the run_count last record is the same as the previous record. For example, if I have 5 records displaying the count is 1, 2, 3, 4, 4. This means that the last two rows will have the same color.

          Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried to use the COUNT(RECCOUNT()) as noted in an entry before, but that just gave me the total number of records not a running count. I am using A5v7.

          Thanks!

            Traci, it's interesting that the Invoice form in AlphaSports doesn't have trouble with the last row in the child table browse. Have you actually seen the row color repeat itself for the last record in the embedded browse, or are you fearing that it will repeat because of the run_count() issue?

              Thanks to help from Tom, I was able to get the code working. Here's what worked:

              counter= iif(table.current().eof(),run_count(client->client_lastname)+1,run_count(client->client_lastname))

              flag_color = iif(mod(calc->Counter,2)=0,"even","odd")

              Thanks, Tom!
