Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Index documentation?

    Hi folks

At some point in the dark and distant past I created an index and foolishly didn't make a note of the index expression. I now want to view the index expression I used. Does anyone know how to do that? Perhaps I'm missing something glaringly obvious...

    Many thanks
    Paul

    Paul -
It's been awile, but try the following. From the Main Menu, select Indexes/ranges, Update indexes, and the index you wish to view. You should get a screen with the index setup.

      Hi John
Been there, tried that - all it gives me is the "title" of the index, not the index expression itself. I normally call indexes things like "Colour then Size" to provide brief info about how it was created, but on this occasion I must have been under more stress than usual (!) and didn't leave any clues.

I'll bet someone has the answer....

      Regards
      Paul

1 character. I posted to the wrong forum. Couldn't figure out how to delete the message which I know should be obvious.

          Hi Bill

That sounds like an Alpha Five thing - we're talking Alpha Four here, but I appreciate your reply.

          Many thanks

            Hi Paul,

I don't know how to view an index that once was and is no longer. I'm afraid that it's possible I might be misunderstanding your question.

I can view my indexes in the same manner as how John Osterle advised. When I do the same as he's suggested, I'm at a screen and there is a field for Index Expression where the expression that I developed is listed and viewable.

I'm sorry I can't help any more than that.

Paul, I assume the index is still attached to the database, if not it will need to be attached via the Index menu. Then you should be able to view/modify the index title and expression via the index setup as John states above. Or optionally, make your index the active index and the press ALT + F3 which brings up the script menu, then select "display script Variables" and look for the system variable %SYS_INDEX_EXPRESSION, which should have the index expression in it.

                Mike,
When creating an index, it prompts for a description. If you enter a description, that's what appears in the list (as John describes). If however you leave the description blank, it is the index expression which appears in the list. At least, that's how it seems to work on my A4v8.
The index is still there, I just want to see what the expression is that created it.
                Your input is much appreciated.

Your second suggestion worked - I hadn't thought of that.

Strangely enough, I rebooted Alpha4 and now I do get to view/edit the index title and expression. Can't explain that.

                  Thanks for your help, everyone.
                  You're a good crowd.

                        Index Documentation App

Way back in 1996 I wrote a small Index Documentation app. A zip file is attached. All of the scripts begin with "ndx". There are 2 databases, INDEXDBF and INDEXDOC. First, run the "ndxdoc" script and select "Add Databases to INDEXDBF". It will add 1 record to INDEXDBF for each dbf file it finds in your current directory. Then, run "ndxdoc" again and select "Document the Indexes". Index documentation records will be written to the INDEXDOC database. Run "ndxdoc" a 3rd time and you can browse and print the documentation. I think Jim Chapman also wrote an index doc app that was more polished.

Thank you - much appreciated. This will definitely help me (and others, no doubt).
